At the end of each month, we’ll highlight some of the advocacy work, events, and other activities of the Truman community across the nation. This month, Truman fought for Special Immigrant Visas, welcomed new members, and raised the alarm about the national security threat of climate change. Neil Ruiz Neil Ruiz currently heads a new Global Migration and Demography program at Pew Research Center. In this role, he directs a research team that studies the movement of people across borders, including analyses of U.S. and European immigrant visa systems, a survey of Asian-Americans, refugees, and the impact of migration on economic development in both the developed and developing worlds. Neil has spent over a decade as a think tank scholar, having previously been the Executive Director of the George Washington University’s Center for Law, Economics, and Finance, a fellow at The Brookings Institution, an international migration specialist at The World Bank and the Asian Development Bank, and a teaching fellow at Harvard University. He received a PhD in Political Economy from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, a MSc in Economic History from Oxford University, and a BA in Political Science from the University of California, Berkeley. Truman National Security Project's Class of 2017 Orientations Over the past month, Truman National Security Project hosted orientations for the 2017 class of Defense Council, Political Partners, and Security Fellows. The Truman community now includes 1,702 veterans, frontline civilians, policy experts, and political professionals who are committed to a shared vision of U.S. leadership abroad.This new class is split evenly between men and women; we also accepted new members into more than three-quarters of our nationwide Chapters, and welcomed more first-generation college students into the community than any year prior. Nationwide Screenings of the Age of Consequences The Age of Consequences, which explores how climate change impacts national security and global stability, made its debut at the 2017 DC Environmental Film Festival. The film features Truman President and CEO Michael Breen and also highlights the work that our military and veterans are putting toward the clean technology transition.
