GOP state Treasurer Ron Estes has won the special election for Kansas' 4th District, defeating Democrat James Thompson in an unexpectedly close race that drew late national attention amid worries the heavily Republican seat was slipping away.

Estes had 52 percent of the vote to 46 percent for Thompson when the Associated Press called the race with 88 percent of precincts reporting.

The NRCC made a late ad buy bashing Thompson and boosting Estes, House Republicans' main super PAC jumped in with get-out-the-vote efforts, Ted Cruz held a rally in Wichita to gin up Republican support, and Vice President Mike Pence and Trump himself both recorded robocalls sent to district Republicans urging them to turn out.

The district was previously represented by Republican Mike Pompeo, Trump's CIA director.
