The visiting alumni who spoke with our students shared inspiring stories about how they let their lives speak through their work in medicine, social services, entrepreneurship, civil rights, journalism, and more. We are always incredibly fortunate to host such distinguished alumni, who are willing to travel here from around the country to speak with our students. For the all-School celebration, I donned a purple wizard’s hat and joined Head of School Bryan Garman (a.k.a. Dumbledore), the principals of the Lower and Middle Schools, and Athletic Director Anne Renninger in a presentation of our favorite passages from Harry Potter, to the delight of our students. Arts Guild performances from our talented student body capped off the day. Please ask your children to tell you about their favorite part of the experience! On May 3, as our 12th graders begin their senior projects, we will have special programming for students in grades 9 through 11: * Ninth graders will spend the day at the National Zoo as part of their biology curriculum. Ninth grade dean Diane Scattergood will send home permission forms and additional information. Students should arrive at Sidwell Friends at the normal start time, 8:00 a.m. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Diane Scattergood. * Tenth graders will spend the morning taking a practice ACT. They should plan to arrive on campus promptly at 7:45 a.m. so that they can be in their seats for an 8:00 exam start time. These practice exams will be marked by partner organization Academic Approach, and scores will be sent home in early June. Scores are unofficial and will not be reported to colleges. Sophomores should use the practice exam as an opportunity to get a sense of what the ACT entails, so they can choose between the ACT and the SAT next year. Any questions may be directed toward Emily Thigpen. * Many of our 11th graders will be taking the English literature AP exam on the morning of May 3. Juniors who are not taking the exam are allowed to stay home, as all 11th grade classes will be canceled. Classes will also be canceled on May 5, which is the day of the AP US history exam. Questions regarding AP testing may be sent to Cory Zimmerman. Next week is senior exam week—in other words, the last week of 12th grade classes! Congratulations to our hardworking seniors! We will hold our spring choral concert on Friday, April 28, at 7:30 p.m. and our spring instrumental concert on Sunday, April 30, at 2:30 p.m. These are wonderful community events, and I hope to see many of you there! Warmly, Mamadou Guèye Upper School Principal Announcements US FACULTY AND STAFF APPRECIATION BREAKFAST The Upper School's Parents Association is sponsoring an appreciation breakfast for our dedicated faculty and staff on Friday, May 12. All families are invited to participate. Our teachers, coaches, and administrative staff members welcome this special tradition! We are looking for volunteers to donate baked goods, other breakfast treats, fresh fruit, ground coffee, tea, and juice, as well as plates and utensils. Contributions should be dropped off at the Upper School faculty lounge no later than 7:45 a.m. on Friday, May 12. If possible, please send your donation on an attractive platter or tray. Please also label any non-disposable dishes with your name, and have your student pick them up in the faculty lounge by the end of the day. Sign up to bring food and/or volunteer at this link. We will also need three volunteers to help us set up the breakfast at 7:30 a.m., two volunteers to accept donations from drivers in the carpool lane from 7:30 to 8:00 a.m., and three volunteers to help clean up at 12:00 p.m. Please contact Robyn Alexander at robynalexchef@gmail.com if you have any questions. LOWER SCHOOL GIVING TREE DONATIONS Please support the Lower School's Giving Tree project. Donations may be dropped in the collection bin at the Middle School, at the Zartman House front desk, in Mr. Woods's office, or in Ms. Sumka's office. The Giving Tree project is an ongoing, collaborative effort to create a community of students that understands that there are people who do not have the things they need, as opposed to all the stuff that they may want. Lower School students have worked together across classes and grade levels to generate a list of needed items. We ask the larger community to help collect these things, which will be packed in individual bags and distributed to clients of Bethesda Cares. 1. Q-tips (cotton swabs) 2. Cotton balls 3. Tissues 4. Baby wipes 5. Hand sanitizer 6. Saline eye drops 7. Granola bars and/or protein bars Thank you! Events QUAKER LIFE COFFEE AND DISCUSSION: APRIL 24 Join MS and US Quaker Life Committee clerks for coffee, discussion, and Meeting for Worship on Monday, April 24, from 8:00 to 9:00 a.m. in the Zartman House Bernstein Drawing Room. Our lively discussions inspire our Quaker Quotes and Questions feature in this e-newsletter, so bring your inquiring mind! While timing is geared toward US and MS drop-off, relatives and caregivers from all divisions are welcome. GAMETIME! BOYS' LACROSSE, APRIL 25; CREW, APRIL 29 Boys' lacrosse will play GDS on Tuesday, April 25, at 4:00 p.m. on the lower turf field. Crew will compete at the Charlie Butt Regatta on Saturday, April 29, at the Georgetown Waterfront. For information about the regatta and when our girls will row, check the rowing team website on Friday. Most races are run between 9:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. Treats for fans will be available at each event. Our last GAMETIME! of the year will be baseball on Friday, May 5, at 4:00 p.m. Go Quakers! COLLEGE COUNSELING EVENTS: APRIL 26 AND 27 Juniors and parents of juniors are invited to attend the Washington Area Independent School (WAIS) 2017 College Fair on Wednesday, April 26. The event will be held at Georgetown Preparatory School in the Hanley Center from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. More than 200 colleges and universities will attend. Parents of students in grades 9 through 11 are invited to attend a Parents Coffee with three admissions deans from 8:00 to 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 27, in the RLS Meeting Room. Admissions deans from Boston College, the University of Michigan, and Williams College will offer insights on the admissions process and engage in a Q&A session about it. UPPER SCHOOL CONCERTS: APRIL 28 AND 30 The Upper School Choral Concert will take place on Friday, April 28, at 7:30 p.m. in the Robert L. Smith Meeting Room, while the Upper School Instrumental Concert will take place on Sunday, April 30, at 2:30 p.m. in the Arts Center courtyard (with the RLS Meeting Room as a rain location). All are welcome to come and enjoy wonderful music. There will be a reception after the choral concert on Friday night. The Rocklands BBQ food truck, which includes vegetarian options, will be on-site on Sunday from 1:00 to 4:30 p.m. Please bring a healthy appetite and many friends and family members. We will provide folding chairs for the audience, but you should feel free to bring your own portable chairs if you prefer. We look forward to seeing you there! PAS FAMILY POTLUCK: MAY 7 The Parents of Asian Students (PAS) invites all Sidwell Friends families and friends to the Second Annual PAS Family Potluck. The PAS seeks to create an environment that will increase awareness of Asian cultures, languages, and heritages within our School's community. All interested parents are welcome, regardless of race, ethnicity, or background. This year's event will take place on Sunday, May 7, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. in a tent behind the Upper School's Zartman House. The event is open to all three divisions of our School and is a great opportunity to reconnect with old friends and welcome new families into our community. Please RSVP by May 3 at this link. We hope to see you on May 7! EJC BOOK DISCUSSION, "WE GON' BE ALRIGHT": MAY 9 Please join us as we continue to discuss the issues and challenges raised in Jeff Chang's book We Gon' Be Alright: Notes on Race and Resegregation. We will meet in the Upper School library on Tuesday, May 9, from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. Our yearlong theme is identity, and we seek a rich diversity of opinions and experiences on the topics we cover at EJC gatherings. RSVP at this link. Please remember to indicate whether or not you will need childcare. A light supper will be offered at 6:30 p.m. Feel free to contact Kathi Webb for more information. MS/US GRANDPARENTS AND FRIENDS DAY: MAY 12 Please take a moment to check in with grandparents and special friends who plan to attend Grandparents and Friends Day on Friday, May 12, and make sure they have registered online. (If they haven't, the registration link can be found here, along with details about the day.) The deadline to RSVP is April 28. Please also note that the contact phone number on the paper invitations mailed to grandparents is incorrect. The correct number is 202-537-8109. If you have questions about the event, or if your guest/s will need special assistance, please contact Kathi Webb at webbk@sidwell.edu or 202-537-8109. The Lower School's Grandparents and Friends Day will take place on Thursday, May 11. Other QUAKER QUOTES AND QUESTIONS "Something I know from experience is that we can’t truly 'answer that of God in every one' in the abstract, in some vague distant world of analysis and political ideology that hovers aloof above the fray, as if Quakers are somehow too good at nonviolent social change to actually get involved. I think we have fallen into this too often. Margaret Fell might call this 'having the form of godliness, but not the power.' It can look pretty good, but it’s hollow where it matters." Noah Baker Merrill, Acting in Faith (2011) Quaker quotes alternate with questions about Quakerism in this newsletter feature. To ask a question about Quaker history or practices, please email our Sidwell Friends Quaker Life Committee's authors at quakerquestions@sidwell.edu.
