Sunday - April 2, 2017 Principal's Letter MESSAGE FROM MAMADOU Announcements REGISTER NOW FOR A NIGHT FOR SCHOLARS GRANDPARENTS AND SPECIAL FRIENDS DAYS REGISTRATION Events ARTS COMMITTEE POTLUCK AND PLANNING SESSION: APRIL 4 GAMETIME! BOYS' TENNIS AND MORE: APRIL 5 PARENTS COUNCIL OF WASHINGTON SPEAKER: APRIL 12 11TH GRADE PARENT COFFEE WITH DR. KASAAN HOLMES: APRIL 13 FAMILY SERVICE OPPORTUNITY WITH NPS: APRIL 15 Other QUAKER QUOTES AND QUESTIONS News Around the School Principal's Letter MESSAGE FROM MAMADOU Dear Friends, I hope you have had a wonderful spring break! As you know, third-quarter report cards were posted on Educator Online on March 24. I encourage you to reach out to your child’s advisor if you have any questions. When we return to school on Monday, we will begin our long farewell to our seniors, who will have four weeks of classes left. April 28 is the last day of regular senior classes. I know this is a bittersweet time for our seniors and their families. Our seniors are ready to take on the world, but saying goodbye and letting them go are not easy! At the end of April, seniors will take their semester exams and complete final projects. (Seniors will begin their senior projects on May 1.) The senior exam schedule is built into the regular school day. All senior classes meet that week, so even classes that are normally off on Wednesdays or Thursdays will meet. With the exception of history exam day, which is Monday, all other exams and projects will have two designated class periods. It’s important to bear in mind that not all teachers will use two class periods for their final exams. Students should communicate directly with their teachers to get more information about specific testing plans. Senior Exam Schedule April 24: History April 25: Science and Language April 26: Science and Language April 27: Math and English April 28: Math and English AP Exams will be administered May 1 through May 12. Seniors who are required to take AP exams (Physics II, Chemistry II, Biology II, Calculus AB, Calculus BC, etc.) must continue to attend their classes. They will need to schedule their senior project commitments around their AP class schedule. The fourth quarter is the longest quarter for our 9th, 10th, and 11th graders. This means that there is still lots of room for growth and improvement in the last quarter of the year. It’s important that students pace themselves over the next two months. The longer days and warmer spring temperatures may tempt students to linger outdoors and procrastinate on schoolwork. While I want our students to enjoy the beautiful weather and time with friends, we can’t let spring fever get the best of us! Let’s balance work and play and finish the year on a strong note! Warmly, Mamadou Guèye Upper School Principal Announcements REGISTER NOW FOR A NIGHT FOR SCHOLARS Register now to attend A Night for Scholars, which will take place on Saturday, April 22, from 7:00 to 10:30 p.m. in the Athletic Center. This 46-year tradition of philanthropy supports student financial aid at Sidwell Friends and brings the School community together to celebrate the impact and importance of Quaker education. Twenty-three percent of our students receive financial aid, and this spring fundraiser makes many of those awards possible. You can get involved by becoming an event sponsor or by advertising in the event program. Tell your friends and be sure to attend on April 22! GRANDPARENTS AND SPECIAL FRIENDS DAYS REGISTRATION Invitations for Grandparents and Special Friends Days in all three divisions will be mailed shortly. Many grandparents are eager to know more, so please feel free to share this registration link, which has detailed information about the programs in the three divisions. If your grandparents or friends cannot register themselves, please feel free to register for them. We don’t have e-mail addresses for some grandparents, so the link to registration will also be provided in our April grandparents and friends newsletter. Reminders will be sent by e-mail. Feel free to contact Kathi Webb with any questions at webbk@sidwell.edu or 202-537-8109. You can also send questions to grandparents@sidwell.edu. Other QUAKER QUOTES AND QUESTIONS Since business meetings are a form of Meeting for Worship, does Quaker business practice include taking minutes and recording business decisions? Minutes are not only scrupulously taken and kept—and referred to even decades into the past when necessary, tying Quaker fabric through time—historically they have importantly knit Friends together across geography through the Traveling Minute. In that tradition, a meeting with a strong insight or with leading for action or for witness minutes shares its unity in the form of a letter or certificate carried by a Friend or Friends to other meetings, even across oceans and continents, where they attest to other meetings. The Traveling Minute lends their words the authority of their home meeting’s voice. This practice continues especially in deeply felt matters, but before the advent of modern forms of communication it importantly allowed an inherently fluid and evolving society to move in unity to a greater degree, especially around social conscience issues and actions like abolition of slavery or conscientious objection to war. More prosaically, a monthly Meeting for Business is typically presided over by three officers (members rotate into these positions every few years)—clerk, alternate clerk, and recording clerk. The recording clerk records reports made, points of discussion, and diversity of viewpoints (without attribution: “A Friend pointed out that ...”). As the clerk guides the meeting through clearness, sense of the meeting, unity, and decision, the recording clerk records decisions as they are made. Committee meetings run similarly but often less formally. When possible, and increasingly with the advent of modern technology, minutes are crafted in real time, read aloud and edited as needed, and approved before the close of the meeting. They tend to be sparse and simply reflect the sense of the meeting and decisions taken. Quaker quotes alternate with questions about Quakerism in this newsletter feature. To ask a question about Quaker history or practice e-mail our Sidwell Friends Quaker Life Committees’ authors at quakerquestions@sidwell.edu.
