Tuesday - January 18, 2011 From the School Query of the Week How can we remain peaceful in the midst of conflict?Notes from Sally We have two assemblies this week. On Wednesday afternoon, we will have a special program beginning at 1:05. In celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, we will be welcoming the writer and several performers from the musical drama, "I Dream", which chronicles the life of Dr. King. Douglas Tappin will talk about his inspiration for writing the show and the creation of this large musical production which premiered last July in Atlanta. There will also be several musical performances which will include a performance from the actor who played Dr. King in the show. On Friday afternoon we will welcome the Monumental Brass Quintet for a program called Science is Beautiful Sound. Parents are welcome for either program. The 5th grade chorus will travel to the Lower School on Friday to perform for their assembly. A special thanks to all our parent drivers! This Friday is the end of the semester for 5/6 Chorus and for 8th grade arts. Chorus will switch from 5th grade to 6th grade starting on Monday, January 24th, and 8th grade arts classes will change the same day. Those lists are posted for students outside the office. A special reminder of the parent evening with Stephen Balkam on Wednesday night January 26th at 7:30. We hope you can join us for this informative evening on the digital world in which our children are living. Also looking ahead, we have a big arts weekend coming up with the Variety Show on January 29th and Artrageous on January 30th. We hope you will also join us for a Playback Theater performance with our very own troupe Vertical Voices on Friday evening, January 28th. We are so grateful for the snacks sent in for our faculty meetings - they make us feel well taken care of! We do have some left over dishes in the office - come check to see if they are yours. Although 7th grader Robel Selassie was a strong competitor, a hearty congratulations to 8th grader Gigi Stark, who won the Middle School competition in the National Geographic Geography Bee! Gigi now goes on to the qualifying competition for the DC State round. Good luck! This Saturday the Middle School debate team will be part of a competition at Alice Deal Middle School.
