Such a nice, warm, human observation. David spent this first day in Washington with the WFP USA policy team in a series of meetings within Congress. From meetings with the Chairs of the House & Senate Appropriations Committees to discussions with longtime supporters like Jim McGovern and Chairman Conaway, it was a very successful day. Message from Executive Director David Beasley to All WFP Staff 5 April 2017 Dear Colleagues, It is truly an honour to be joining you today on my first official day as the new Executive Director of the U.N. World Food Programme. I am excited to be a part of a team whose global reputation is second-to-none. Each one of you is on the front lines in the fight against hunger and poverty around the world, and one of my immediate goals is to protect and increase the resources that we can use to achieve our goals, from both public and private sources. That is why during my first two days on the job I am meeting with leaders in Washington, D.C., to fight for and protect the funding you need to meet the crises we face. You have heard the rumours and speculation that the number one donor to the WFP could possibly reduce support. We cannot take that chance and we must make the case to the United States and our other top donors that children and families need their support now more than ever. Our humanity is at stake. On Friday before travelling to Rome, I will meet with the Secretary-General to assure him that as a team, and as part of the U.N. family, I am confident we can meet the humanitarian challenges we face, and exchange ideas on how we can collectively meet the goal of zero hunger. As you know, the need for assistance is at an unprecedented level, and at this time we are operating in an extremely complicated environment. We will need all the resources we have and more. I want to energize the entire world to help meet this massive demand. I know you understand this and one of my roles as your Executive Director is to encourage you, empower you, inspire you, and advocate relentlessly for the organization, so that those who need our help get it! I had the privilege of being in South Sudan for their initial Independence Day, and my heart breaks for the suffering in the world’s newest nation. I have been there and in other crisis regions, and I plan to return very soon to raise awareness about what we face both there and in the 80-plus countries where we operate. I look forward to working with each of you, as well as our colleagues throughout the U.N., especially with our Rome-based colleagues at FAO and IFAD. WFP is indeed a remarkable organization. We have people here at WFP from different parts of the world, from different backgrounds, different faiths, and different perspectives. Yet over 14,000 of us are working together to love and help those on Earth who are hungry, hurting, and in need of what we have to offer. I want to say thank you to all the staff who have been helping me with the transition to this amazing position, starting with our former Executive Director, Ertharin Cousin. You have already been a tremendous help. Sincerely, David The information contained in this electronic message and any attachments is intended for specific individuals or entities, and may be confidential, proprietary or privileged.
