International Herald Tribune Sanctioning Iran January 14, 2011 Regarding the article “Sanctions against Iran are working, U.S. declares” (Jan. 11): Here she goes again: Secretary of State Hillary Clinton visiting corrupt Arab governments, hated by their own people, seeking their help to punish Iran. It is a waste of her time and it is beneath her. It has not worked before, so why should there be any expectation that it will work now? What the secretary should be doing is vigorously seeking engagement by finding common ground on regional issues that matter to the United States and to Iran. And she should be doing the hard work of proposing solutions that benefit both countries. So much time and energy has been wasted by both Iran and the United States in the last 30 years, fanning the flames of enmity. This must stop. It is vital for the national security of the United States not to let another year go by fighting the same ghosts. Fariborz S. Fatemi McLean, Virginia
