Chief White House strategist Steve Bannon has been removed from the National Security Council, according to a White House official and a Federal Register filing on Wednesday, undoing a move that had directed heavy criticism toward the administration of President Donald Trump.

Bannon, the controversial former head of the alt-right media outlet Breitbart News, was the chief executive of Trump's presidential campaign. The White House initially defended his presence on the council based on his history as a naval officer, a shield that did little to protect the Trump administration from a bipartisan wave of complaints over a political official serving in a national security role.

As part of the National Security Council's reorganization, National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster is empowered to set the agenda for its meetings, according to Bloomberg, which first reported the change.
