KASAAN HOLMES: APRIL 13 FAMILY SERVICE OPPORTUNITY WITH NPS: APRIL 15 GAMETIME! SOFTBALL: APRIL 18 A NIGHT FOR SCHOLARS: APRIL 22 QUAKER LIFE COFFEE AND DISCUSSION: APRIL 24 Other QUAKER QUOTES AND QUESTIONS News Around the School Principal's Letter MESSAGE FROM MAMADOU Dear Friends, As you know, this Monday students will have the chance to remain home and rest so that faculty can gather with colleagues from the other two divisions for a professional day. Faculty and staff will spend the day discussing the details of the action plan that resulted from the recent reaccreditation process and considering queries posed by the various subcommittees of the Board of Trustees' Strategic Planning Committee. The agenda for the day will provide us with the time and opportunity to reflect on our practices and to engage in thoughtful discussions of how we might create new approaches to best meet the learning needs of our students. On Tuesday, April 11, faculty and staff will have the opportunity to hear Malcolm Gladwell, critically acclaimed journalist and author of The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference (2000), Blink: The Power of Thinking without Thinking (2005), and Outliers: The Story of Success (2008). On Wednesday, April 13, from 8:00 to 9:00 a.m., Upper School psychologist Kasaan Holmes will meet with parents of juniors to talk about the increasing stress that students in this grade feel, especially as they enter the AP exam period in May and prepare for the college admissions process. Dr. Holmes is a wonderful resource for students and parents, so I hope parents will attend this morning conversation. The Black Student Union Go-Go will take place on Saturday, April 15, in the Athletic Center. This year, our students have invited students from area schools, including Georgetown Day School, Maret, Potomac, St. Andrews, and Wilson. We look forward to hosting friends for this event! Warmly, Mamadou Guèye Upper School Principal Announcements REGISTRATION FOR GRANDPARENTS AND FRIENDS DAY The Upper School’s Grandparents and Friends Day is coming up on Friday, May 12. Registration, which includes filling out a name tag and snacking on light refreshments, will begin at 9:00 a.m. in the Arts Center courtyard. A program for visitors will begin at 9:30 a.m. in the Robert L. Smith Meeting Room. After taking a break with the Upper School students, our guests will have the opportunity to enjoy two classroom experiences. Grandparents and friends are also invited to join their students for lunch in the Wannan Gym. Photographers will be present to capture the morning, and photos will be shared on our online portal. Our program will end at 12:45 p.m. Please use this registration link, and feel free to share it with parents if they would like to come. Mailed invitations will go out soon. If you have questions about the event, or if your guest needs special assistance, please contact Kathi Webb at webbk@sidwell.edu or 202-537-8109. LOWER SCHOOL GIVING TREE DONATIONS Please support the Lower School's Giving Tree project. Donations may be dropped in the collection bin at the Middle School, at the Zartman House front desk, in Mr. Woods's office, or in Ms. Sumka's office. The Giving Tree project is an ongoing, collaborative effort to create a community of students that understands that there are people who do not have the things they need, as opposed to all the stuff that they may want. Lower School students have worked together across classes and grade levels to generate a list of needed items. We ask the larger community to help collect these things, which will be packed in individual bags and distributed to clients of Bethesda Cares. 1. Q-tips (cotton swabs) 2. Cotton balls 3. Tissues 4. Baby wipes 5. Hand sanitizer 6. Saline eye drops 7. Granola bars and/or protein bars Thank you! Events PARENTS COUNCIL OF WASHINGTON SPEAKER: APRIL 12 Glenn Whitman will present “Learning and Your Child’s Brain: What Research Suggests” on Wednesday, April 12, from 8:30 to 11:00 a.m. at Holton-Arms School, 7303 River Road, Bethesda. Glenn is the dean of studies at St. Andrew’s Episcopal School, the director of the Center for Transformative Teaching and Learning, and the coauthor of Neuroteach: Brain Science and the Future of Education. The event is open to all. Learn more and RSVP here. 11TH GRADE PARENT COFFEE WITH DR. KASAAN HOLMES: APRIL 13 This semester, juniors started working with their college counselors. In the next few months, they will be taking AP exams, SATs, and ACTs. On April 13 at 8:00 a.m., please join Upper School psychologist Dr. Kasaan Holmes for a morning conversation on stress management, what we’re doing here at school to support students, and what you can do at home. The event will be held in the choral room. FAMILY SERVICE OPPORTUNITY WITH NPS: APRIL 15 In honor of the 100th anniversary of the National Park Service and our Quaker commitment to stewardship, get the whole family involved in the spirit of service and national pride! Volunteer on Saturday, April 15, for a half day (9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.) to get outside and help clean up the National Mall. This service opportunity welcomes all ages, from PKers to grandparents! To sign up, please e-mail Erin Andrews (brophyerin@hotmail.com), our Lower School community service PA representative. GAMETIME! SOFTBALL: APRIL 18 Come support the softball team on Tuesday, April 18, at 4:15 p.m., when they take on the Maret Frogs. Treats for fans will be available on the softball field. Go Quakers! If you would like to bring a younger group to the game, please let us know by e-mailing PA.Athletics@sidwell.edu, and we’ll see if we can work in an opportunity to meet the team. A NIGHT FOR SCHOLARS: APRIL 22 A Night for Scholars, taking place this year on Saturday, April 22, from 7:00 to 10:30 p.m., is Sidwell Friends' tradition of philanthropy in support of student financial aid, now in its 46th year. The event brings the SFS community together to celebrate the impact and importance of Quaker education. Twenty-three percent of students receive financial aid, and the spring fundraiser makes many of those awards possible. The event will be held in the Sidwell Friends Athletic Center, 3825 Wisconsin Avenue NW, Washington, DC. Begin the evening with friends as you enjoy a delicious array of food and beverages while signing up for parties hosted by members of our community. As the night progresses, there will be a short program with remarks from Head of School Bryan Garman, a performance by the chamber chorus, a video about the SFS community, and the opportunity to contribute to financial aid through our Fund-a-Scholar donation event. Alyson Cambridge ’97 will close the evening with some selections from her new jazz album. Encourage your friends to join us on April 22. We guarantee you’ll leave feeling good about your investment in Sidwell Friends. All proceeds will go toward student financial aid. Ways to get involved: Become an event sponsor Advertise in the event program Register now and join your friends on April 22! QUAKER LIFE COFFEE AND DISCUSSION: APRIL 24 Join MS and US Quaker Life Committee clerks for coffee, discussion, and Meeting for Worship on Monday, April 24, from 8:00 to 9:00 a.m. in the Zartman House Bernstein Drawing Room. Our lively discussions inspire our Quaker Quotes and Questions feature in this e-newsletter, so bring your inquiring mind! While timing is geared toward US and MS drop-off, relatives and caregivers from all divisions are welcome. Other QUAKER QUOTES AND QUESTIONS “I give myself this advice: Do not fear truth, let it be ever so contrary to inclination and feeling. Never give up the search after it; and let me take courage, and try from the bottom of my heart to do that which I believe truth dictates, if it lead me to be a Quaker or not.” —?Elizabeth Gurney Fry (1780–1845) Quaker quotes alternate with questions about Quakerism in this newsletter feature. To ask a question about Quaker history or practice, e-mail our Sidwell Friends Quaker Life Committees’ authors at quakerquestions@sidwell.edu.
