Democrat Jon Ossoff and Republican Karen Handel have advanced to a runoff in the special House election in Georgia, with Ossoff narrowly missing out on an outright win, prolonging a campaign many Democrats have come to see as an early referendum on President Donald Trump.

Ossoff had 48 percent of the vote in the all-party primary when the Associated Press declared that he would head to a runoff. Handel, Georgia's former secretary of state, had 20 percent, about twice as much support as the next-highest Republican in the fight for second place in the all-party primary.
