Dear Members of the WFP USA Board, As you know, the international community is facing unprecedented famines across 4 countries and a record number of people displaced by war. The FY17 annual appropriation that will likely pass Congress shortly (possibly next week) provides for increases over FY16 funding levels in the accounts that fund global hunger operations, demonstrating continued USG commitment to alleviating global hunger. Further, there is bipartisan support for a supplemental appropriation (in addition to the FY17 annual funding) that would provide an additional $1 billion to address the famine/possible famines. Our policy team has been working closely with leaders in Congress on the annual appropriations and supplemental funding. The following link and attached is an op-ed by Bob Dole and me seeking additional support for the supplemental appropriation. We are sharing this widely on the Hill and within the Administration. As noted in the op-ed, the USG is presented with an opportunity to provide critical global leadership. Please feel free to share the op-ed. Thank you. All the Best, Rick The op-ed is now live on The Hill: http://thehill.com/blogs/pundits-blog/international/329923-avoiding-the-sound-of-silence-us-leadership-in-the-face-of Richard Leach President & CEO World Food Program USA 1725 Eye Street NW, Suite 510 Washington, DC 20006 T 202.627.3737 F 202.530.1698 rleach@wfpusa.org<mailto:jcorum@wfpusa.org>
