Dear all, A major part of the infrastructure upgrade (tunnel) in the main Greek rail line has been completed today. After the completion of the overall upgrade project the trip from Athens to Thessaloniki (the two major Greek cities) will take 3 hours and15 mins (now 5). That changes dramatically the competition dynamics in the Greek transportation market (i.e., train should become much more popular than today, compared to car or airplane). Also the upgrade increases capacity and enables shift from oil to electricity powered locomotives. Best, Vassilis The original article Goggle translated: “The second-longest tunnel in Greece and one of the longest rail tunnels in the Balkans, distance 6,4 km, to be delivered in the coming days by the contractor company, AKTOR, in «, something that will allow until 2017 the completion of the rail axis Patras-Athens-Thessaloniki and will restore the Greece in European railway map. This is the Othryos Tunnel with twin tunnel which will enable trainose, not only to gain time on the route Athens-Thessaloniki, but also with the electrification will be able to have an extremely big savings for the company and improve its results. The Othryos project also includes the construction of 5 railroad bridges with a total length of 1,796 m, which were built for dual concrete rail line electrification, with the construction of road works etc. By its delivery to rail traffic time Athens-Thessaloniki route will shortens by one hour, while the capacity of the rail axis will be multiplied. At the same time, TRAINOSE has mandated all theremaining tasks in the new rail line Tithorea-Domokos, 415 million budget. euro. The projects were launched in January 2013 from the Consortium AKTOR-TERNA J&P AVAX. The completion is expected by the end of 2016. With the completion of the train would need 3 hours and 15 minutes to travel from Athens to Thessaloniki, changing the map of transport (Now it is 5 hours)”
