Good Evening, Welcome to The Evening CSIS—my daily guide to key insights CSIS brings to the events of the day plus HIGHLY RECOMMENDED content from around the world. To subscribe, please send me an email at aschwartz@csis.org (mailto:aschwartz@csis.org) . ** G7 Concerned by South China Sea ------------------------------------------------------------ Foreign ministers from the Group of Seven (G7) expressed concern over territorial disputes in Asian waters where China has been more aggressively asserting its claims, as Bloomberg’s Andy Sharp reports (http://gcaptain.com/g7-leaders-concerned-by-south-china-sea-territorial-disputes/) . China’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kang responded today at his regular news conference by saying, “some countries keep hyping up or fabricating some so-called issues (http://www.fmprc.gov.cn/mfa_eng/xwfw_665399/s2510_665401/t1354724.shtml) .” Dive Deeper: CSIS’s Asia Maritime Transparency Initiative (AMTI) first reported (http://amti.csis.org/airstrips-near-completion/ ) an octagonal tower with a conical feature at its top, located on the northeast side of Subi Reef, in early January. AMTI reported then that the lighthouse was nearly complete, measuring almost 100 feet tall. And, CSIS’s AMTI tracks all island reclamation activities in maritime Asia using an interactive “Island Tracker (http://amti.csis.org/island-tracker/) .” ** Planned Attack ------------------------------------------------------------ The terror cell that carried out attacks in Paris and Brussels was reportedly planning to target the Euro 2016 soccer championships in France this summer, as the Guardian’s Kim Willsher reports (http://www.theguardian.com/world/2016/apr/11/brussels-terror-cell-planned-to-attack-euro-2016-tournament) . Also Highly Recommended: “A Brussels Mentor Who Taught ‘Gangster Islam’ to the Young and Angry (http://www.nytimes.com/2016/04/12/world/europe/a-brussels-mentor-who-taught-gangster-islam-to-the-young-and-angry.html) ,” by the New York Times’ Andrew Higgins and Kimiko De Freytas-Tamura. ** No Substantive Opposition ------------------------------------------------------------ There has been no vocal opposition inside the Pentagon to a plan to allow transgender troops to serve openly, the department’s recently departed personnel chief Brad Carson said today at a CSIS event, as the Hill’s Rebecca Kheel reports (http://thehill.com/policy/defense/275875-ex-pentagon-official-no-substantive-opposition-to-transgender-troops-serving) . As the New York Times finds its sound (http://www.niemanlab.org/2016/03/the-new-york-times-launches-a-podcast-team-to-create-a-new-batch-of-wide-reaching-shows/) , Samantha is one to watch. ** Optics ------------------------------------------------------------ AFP released footage (https://youtu.be/Jx71LbFwfY8) today of a UN World Food Program airdrop of food to a besieged Syrian city. ** Highly Recommended ------------------------------------------------------------ Michael Calderone of the Huffington Post writes (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/washington-post-donald-trump-book_us_570ba43fe4b0836057a19abe) that the Washington Post has assigned more than two dozen reporters and researchers to work on a “comprehensive” Donald Trump biography, “Trump Revealed,” to be published on August 23. ** CSIS Today ------------------------------------------------------------ Today CSIS hosted “The Smartest Places on Earth: Book Discussion with Antoine van Agtmael and Fred Bakker (http://csis.org/event/smartest-places-earth-book-discussion-antoine-van-agtmael-and-fred-bakker) ” and “21st Century Development: Leveraging Data, Technology, and Innovation (http://csis.org/event/21st-century-development-leveraging-data-technology-and-innovation) .” ** CSIS Tomorrow ------------------------------------------------------------ Join us tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. for “The 18th Anniversary of the Good Friday Agreement and the Future of the Northern Ireland Peace Process (http://csis.org/event/18th-anniversary-good-friday-agreement-and-future-northern-ireland-peace-process) .” Join us tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. for “Regional Energy Update: Brazil and Venezuela (http://csis.org/event/regional-energy-update-brazil-and-venezuela) .” And at 4:30 p.m. tomorrow, join us for “The Inaugural Zbigniew Brzezinski Annual Prize and Lecture (http://csis.org/event/inaugural-zbigniew-brzezinski-annual-prize-and-lecture) ,” featuring Dr. Brzezinski, Robert M. True, it was the most commercial Journey possible, their 1981 mega-hit “Don’t Stop Believin,’’ but it was still so much fun. I like the late 70s Journey—the version of the band where keyboardist Gregg Rolie and lead singer Steve Perry traded vocals while Neil Schon absolutely shredded on guitar. And, of course, they had the right hairstyles to amplify their sound. Dig this (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H0RFpXrPv2g) and smile. ** Feedback ------------------------------------------------------------ I always welcome and benefit from your feedback.
