Good Evening, Welcome to The Evening CSIS—my daily guide to key insights CSIS brings to the events of the day plus HIGHLY RECOMMENDED content from around the world. To subscribe, please send me an email at aschwartz@csis.org (mailto:aschwartz@csis.org) . ** Wheels Down ------------------------------------------------------------ President Obama touched down in Riyadh today for his visit to meet with Saudi Arabian and other GCC leaders. The visit got off to a frosty start as the Saudi government sent the governor of Riyadh, rather than a high-ranking royal, to greet the president on the tarmac, as CNN (http://www.cnn.com/2016/04/20/politics/obama-saudi-arabia-tensions/) reports. Dive Deeper: Anthony Cordesman’s latest Commentary, out today: “The Saudi and Gulf Perspective on President Obama’s Visit (http://csis.org/publication/saudi-and-gulf-perspective-president-obamas-visit) .” Just last week CSIS hosted a press briefing on the president’s travels, which will also include the UK and Germany. Here’s the transcript (http://csis.org/files/attachments/160413_press_briefing_obama.pdf) . ** TPP: The Strategic Case ------------------------------------------------------------ Today, CSIS president and CEO John Hamre, along with CSIS’s Asia Chairs coauthored a thought-provoking Commentary (http://csis.org/publication/strategic-case-tpp) . At a time when “in every major Asian capital—friendly or not—the question is being asked whether the U.S. Congress might actually walk away from an agreement,” they make the strategic case for this historic trade deal. ** Epidemic of Fear ------------------------------------------------------------ Coming this Friday, CSIS will release “Ebola in America: Epidemic of Fear”—a documentary telling the story of the Ebola outbreak in America through the eyes of those charged with dealing with it. It features former White House Ebola czar Ron Klain, CDC director Tom Frieden, and the first infected patient in the U.S. Kent Brantley. It’s a must-see, and you can find out why in this trailer. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=czEXoak7-NE) ** In that Number ------------------------------------------------------------ ** 7 ------------------------------------------------------------ Denmark is expanding its mission in Syria to include seven F-16’s, a C-130J, and 60 special forces personnel. Source: Reuters (http://www.reuters.com/article/us-mideast-crisis-danish-mission-idUSKCN0XG2AV) . ** Critical Quote ------------------------------------------------------------ ** “TPP is the single best assurance we have that the United States will lead a broad coalition of like-minded states committed to reinforcing the rules-based order in Asia.” ------------------------------------------------------------ —CSIS’s John Hamre, Michael Green, Matthew Goodman, Scott Miller, Ernest Bower, Victor Cha, Christopher Johnson, Richard Rossow, and Michael Matera on the strategic case for TPP. Source: CSIS (http://csis.org/publication/strategic-case-tpp) . ** One to Watch ------------------------------------------------------------ (Photo Credit: the Atlantic.) Adrienne LaFrance (@AdrienneLaF (https://twitter.com/AdrienneLaF) ) is a staff writer at the Atlantic where she covers technology and has written extensively on the Zika virus. Adrienne formerly served as a reporter at the Nieman Journalism Lab. As the WSJ reports (http://blogs.wsj.com/chinarealtime/2016/04/20/while-beijings-air-quality-improves-smog-makes-journey-to-the-west-greenpeace-finds/) , China's air pollution problem may be moving west. ** Highly Recommended ------------------------------------------------------------ Robert D. Kaplan's article in the Atlantic on "How Islam Created Europe (http://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2016/05/how-islam-created-europe/476388/) ." ** CSIS Today ------------------------------------------------------------ Today CSIS’s Africa Program hosted “Public Perceptions of Violence and Current Developments in South Sudan (http://csis.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=833ec271d60c6750d9c3baaac&id=5ce972b13a&e=d556e146bd) .” CSIS’s International Security Program hosted “Smart Women, Smart Power: The Global Education Agenda - A Conversation with Julia Gillard (http://csis.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=833ec271d60c6750d9c3baaac&id=5bc87a2389&e=d556e146bd) .” ** CSIS Tomorrow ------------------------------------------------------------ Join CSIS’s Human Rights Initiative tomorrow at 9:30 a.m. for “Foreign Policy and Human Rights Challenges in the European Union (http://csis.us11.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=833ec271d60c6750d9c3baaac&id=4840a17238&e=d556e146bd) ” with Stavros Lambrinidis, the EU’s special representative for human rights. The late Stevie Ray Vaughan was a blues-rock guitarist of such immense talent that his name can be mentioned in rare company: Hendrix, Clapton, Page, Robert Johnson, Duane Allman, BB King, Buddy Guy. There’s a few others—maybe. SRV had many performances during his too-short career that are unforgettable. But this one may top them all. How does one take a legendary song by guitarist most consider the best ever (Hendrix) and make it your own? It’s virtually impossible. Unless you are SRV. Almost 9.5 million people have watched this clip (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OEJh2FFUUoU) on YouTube. It belongs to the world. ** Feedback ------------------------------------------------------------ I always welcome and benefit from your feedback.
