We did send something ... I have a call in to Joan to see about getting connected with WFP about tonight's speech. ******************************************** Anthony R. Bernal |Special Assistant to the President & Deputy Chief of Staff to Dr. Jill Biden |The White House| (202) 456-2828| abernal@ovp.eop.gov From: Gleeson, James Sent: Tuesday, April 12, 2016 01:24 PM To: Bernal, Anthony R.; Nix, Sheila; Ruffner, Richard Subject: FW: Talking points for Hunter- WFP USA From: Gleeson, James Sent: Monday, April 11, 2016 4:02 PM To: Joan Mayer Subject: RE: Talking points for Hunter- WFP USA Hi Joan, my apologies for the delay. I hope this isn’t too late. Below are two speech summaries that immediately come to mind. These will need to be reworked since some are direct quotes from speeches. We’re also happy to review any prepared remarks if that helps too. -- She’s traveled all around the world as Second Lady, meeting with refugees and those in need. She often goes where others cannot – the slums, the border of Syria, the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo along the Rwandan border. -- She just returned from visiting the Za’atari refugee camp in Jordan, ten miles from the Syrian border. The camp is home to 40,000 of the more than 325,000 refugee children fleeing war in Syria and seeking safety in Jordan. At the camp, Jill met with many of the children and their families in their homes and classrooms. One young school girl sang, "Education is our beacon of light filled with hope." Two of the mothers she spoke with told her that they have hope that they will one day return home to the families they were forced to leave. In 2011, she traveled to the Dadaab refugee camp in Kenya, 50 miles from the Somali border during the worst drought in 60 years in East Africa. She was heartbroken by the terrible images of starving children in a refugee camp and wanted to do anything she could to help. She met families who walked for days or weeks, often barefoot and with nothing but the clothes on their backs, desperate for food, water, and medical care to save their starving children. She heard an unforgettable story from one mother who told us she was too weak to carry both of her children—that she had to choose between them—and she left one behind on the road in hopes of saving the other. Take a moment. Try to imagine the type of devastation and desperation that would force a mother to make that choice. In the hour of need, the American people stepped up, the international community mobilized to provide assistance, and we saw how even the smallest and simplest investment helped to save lives. She saw inexpensive oral rehydration packs bring listless babies back to life... She saw children getting vitamins and vaccines to stop the spread of deadly diseases throughout the camps. Subject: Talking points for Hunter- WFP USA Hi Anthony, Hope you are doing well! Hunter is introducing his dad next week at the WFP USA Awards Ceremony and he would like to honor his mom as well and the work she has done as it relates to food, hunger and refugees. Would you be able to send me some talking points of things that she has done over the years that I can share with the WFP people to work into his remarks? Many thanks! Best, Joan -- Joan K.
