Students are happily congregating in the campus courtyards and gardens at lunch and in their free time, taking in the sunlight and fresh air. In two weeks, we bid farewell to our seniors, who will be finished with their Upper School coursework and will embark upon their senior projects. Seniors will take their senior exams the week of April 25-29, with April 29 the last day of classes for them. Last weekend, under the direction of John Touchton, our Upper School Chorus delivered two exceptional performances, first at A Night for Scholars, and then the following day with the Apollo Orchestra. I hope you were able to catch their extraordinary performances. Congratulations to John Touchton and our wonderful Chorus! At Wednesday’s Collection, students marked the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death with a talented group of young actors from the acting company We Happy Few, who performed delightful scenes from Much Ado about Nothing. One of our Upper School students is being recognized for her poetry at the 2016 Parkmont Poetry Festival. If your child is interested in writing and publishing their poems, please encourage them to reach out to Hayes Davis, the advisor of our literary journal The Quarterly. I also wanted to remind you that the AP Exam period will take place May 2-13. Juniors will not be assigned major assessments during this time. On May 4, the day of the English literature AP Exam, junior classes will be canceled, so juniors who take the exam will be dismissed from school following the exam. Juniors who are not taking the AP Exam on May 4 will be excused from school. Sophomores will take a practice ACT exam on May 4, and 9th graders will have a special field trip to the National Zoo. Specific details about these programs will be forthcoming. Warmly, Mamadou Mamadou Guèye Upper School Principal Upcoming Events: April 19, Founder’s Day (students report to school for normal school hours) April 19, GAMETIME! for Girls' Varsity Lacrosse, 4:15 p.m. April 25-29, Senior Exam Week April 26, GAMETIME! for Boys' Varsity Tennis, 4:15 p.m. April 29, 7:30 p.m., Spring Choral Concert April 29, Last Day of Senior Classes April 30, GAMETIME! for Crew at Georgetown Waterfront, 10:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. May 2-May 27, Senior Project Period May 2-13, AP Exam Period May 3, GAMETIME! for Boys' Varsity Lacrosse, 4:30 p.m. May 4, 11th Grade English Literature AP Exam, no 11th grade classes May 4, 10th Grade Practice ACT Exam May 4, 9th Grade Field Trip to the Zoo Announcements STUDENT PHOTO AND INTERVIEW Dear Parents, You're probably wondering why two obscure members of Sidwell's Class of 2016 are reaching out to you, so here is our best explanation: When students reach their senior year of high school at Sidwell Friends, we are given the opportunity to dedicate the last month of our time here to our own proposed project. For our senior project, we have chosen to conduct photographic interviews of the students of the SFS Lower, Middle, and Upper schools. The questions in the interview will be about your student’s aspirations, dreams, and goals. We will conduct these interviews with students of each grade who volunteer, and create a book with a compilation of their portrait and snippets of their interviews that we think best encapsulates their essence. Our goal is to express how aspirations vary throughout the Sidwell Friends community and throughout students of all ages. We will take these photos around campus at a time that is convenient to the students. If this sounds like something your child would like to participate in, please let us know! You can reach us at etobin16@sidwell.edu or llewin16@sidwell.edu. We will be happy to send the edited final portraits of your child to you if you would like. (Who wouldn’t want a free semi-professional portrait of their pride and joy?!) We will be conducting the interviews throughout the month of May, and the final book will be available in the high school for many years to come. We hope it will be a great way to look back on the person your child used to be, and see how they have grown. We will send out a permission slip to all those who express interest, so please let us know! We will need to coordinate a time with their teachers and advisors, so please get back to us by Sunday, April 24. Thank you! Laura Lewin and Eliza Tobin Class of 2016 HOST FAMILIES NEEDED FOR EXCHANGE STUDENTS Every year, Sidwell Friends hosts two exchange students from China and one exchange student from Ramallah Friends School. If you are interested in hosting one of our exchange students next year, please contact Upper School Principal Mamadou Guèye. SIDWELL SUMMER STUDIES: NEW COURSE OFFERING Sidwell Summer Studies is excited to offer a new course this summer, Molecular Neuroscience Research. This credit-bearing course, taught by Melanie Fields and Sonal Schropfer, will allow students to conduct scientific investigations while mastering concepts from molecular biology and neuroscience. Other Summer Studies courses offered include History of the United States, English Review, Middle School Review, ACT and SAT Prep, College Application Essay Writing, and a range of math courses (special permission needed for summer acceleration in math). The summer session runs from June 20-July 29. For more information about these courses, please contact Tom Donley at donleyt@sidwell.edu. KID POWER LEADERSHIP ACADEMY The Leadership Academy is a summer program for DC elementary and middle school students that focuses on math, language arts, civics, health and nutrition, and traditional camp enrichment activities. It's a great experience for students and our high school volunteers. Volunteers from SFS serve in a support staff roll during the summer, assisting with small groups of students during academic lessons and camp activities. The Summer Leadership Academy runs from July 5-29, from 9:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. each day. The camp will be held at Jefferson Academy, located at 801 7th Street SW. Those interested in volunteering with Kid Power this summer should e-mail Anna Davis at annad@kidpowerdc.org with contact information and availability during our summer dates. If doing this to complete the graduation requirement, students will need to complete the community engagement contract and submit to Shoshanna Sumka prior to beginning the work. Find out how Philip and Shoshanna are developing Sidwell Friends' diversity and service learning programs, then delve into a conversation facilitated by them about the issues raised in their fields of diversity, global interdependence, conflict resolution, and service learning. This discussion promises to be very robust and rewarding and shouldn’t be missed! Please join us, share your thoughts, exchange views, and explore ideas about how together we can advance our shared Quaker commitment to diversity, inclusion, equity and justice, community service, and global understanding. Other QUAKER QUOTES AND QUESTIONS Is the Quaker testimony of integrity any different, in how it has influenced Quaker life and practice, from any other faith’s celebration of honesty? Yes—in a quirky, unanticipated-consequences sort of way. You may recall that the early expansion of the name “Friends” was Friends of the Truth, in which “truth” referred to the Quaker attitude toward and practice of Christian faith. Framing spiritual life in this way, as a choice between truth and falsehood, tended to lead Quakers to focus very hard on what integrity meant to them in the rest of their lives as well. Friends felt there should be one standard of truth, and for that reason refused to swear oaths in court (for this refusal, many were jailed), because they felt that promising to speak “the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth” as a special circumstance in court essentially implies people are free to lie the rest of the time. Rather, they believed That of God exists within us, and we should speak from that place always, and so should speak truth equally at all times. What happened then was that Quakers—Quaker merchants and businesspeople in particular—acquired a rock-solid reputation for honesty, and the entire group prospered financially as a result. People learned that anyone at all could do business with them on a handshake, or simply on their word, and not be cheated. This happened both in Britain and later in the New World; hence the wryly delivered old saying, “Friends came to Philadelphia to do good, and they did very well.” Without intending to, the practice of charging complete strangers the exact same prices as their best customers also helped revolutionize commerce in the English-speaking world, ending the traditional practice of haggling and ushering in the era of uniform, pre-calculated pricing. Today, Friends often consciously focus on a deeper meaning of integrity that captures the sense of being integral or whole, such that one’s lived life bespeaks one’s convictions. The Upper School’s Honor Code reflects this, as do similar writings in other Quaker venues. Quaker quotes alternate with questions about Quakerism in this newsletter feature. To ask a question about Quaker history or practice, e-mail our Sidwell Friends Quaker Life Committees’ authors at quakerquestions@sidwell.edu! BFM BLACK LIVES MATTER Bethesda Friends Meeting is planning to hand out Black Lives Matter fliers and buttons along Arlington Road between the Bethesda Public Library and the Farmers’ Market at the Bethesda Elementary School. The time is 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. on Sundays in April and May. We would be delighted to have folks from the Sidwell Friends community join us in the endeavor.
