It launched with a Trump interview and a lot more. ** Smiles ------------------------------------------------------------ “If you don’t sign the Outlaws, you’re the dumbest music person I’ve ever met—and I know you’re not.” Wise advice indeed for music impresario Clive Davis from the late, great Lynyrd Skynyrd singer Ronnie Van Zandt in 1974. The Outlaws never became as famous or as influential as Skynyrd, but they recorded some seriously memorable southern rock. For me, The Outlaws “Green Grass and High Tides (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hIaS_vYIQ_A&app=desktop&utm_source=CSIS+All&utm_campaign=d1ababb4cf-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2017_01_18&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_f326fc46b6-d1ababb4cf-145367789) ” isn’t just a staple of early FM album rock. It has a majestic quality to it that endures in the way very few songs do. “Green Grass” isn’t any ordinary rock song. True, it is formulaic in that it has a stunningly good guitar lick that anchors it. But it also shares the type of expansive compositional characteristics Jazz virtuoso Charlie Parker created. When performed live, it’s as improvisational as any Jazz performed by Bird, Dizzy or Miles. Many people wrongly assume the song is about marijuana. It’s not. Outlaws founding member and author of the song Hughie Thomasson says he wrote “Green Grass and High Tides” in St. Augustine, Florida during a band cookout on the beach. The band members had left their guitars at home and Thomasson says the lack of instruments laying around allowed the song to find him. “I was standing by the ocean and there was a breeze and the words kept coming to me,” Thomasson said. “It’s about all the rock stars I liked that died had come back and were playing a show just for me. Like Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin and Jim Morrison.” The song has a regal set of lyrics. “As kings and queens bow and play for you,” is one of them. But my favorite is “castles of stone, soul and glory.” And if you don’t buy into any of this jazz, and you don’t believe in the deification of rock’s departed, just ask yourself this: Is there a better song to blast out of your pickup truck on a warm summer night with a breeze coming off the ocean in some parking lot somewhere with your friends drinking Budweiser? ** Feedback ------------------------------------------------------------ I always welcome and benefit from your feedback.
