Donald J. Trump on Friday was sworn in as the 45th president of the United States, ushering in an era of uncertainty for a nation still divided by a bruising election.

Trump has promised to deliver on an ambitious agenda of robust job growth powered by protectionist trade policies, the repeal of Obamacare, an aggressive posture against terrorism and Islamic extremism, and the restoration of America as a formidable world power. But he has yet to fulfill his pledge to win over skeptics and comes into the White House with historically low approval ratings.

He and his team have been dogged by questions about their relationships with Russian President Vladimir Putin and concerns about Trump's ability to separate himself from his business interests while in office.

More immediately, there are questions about whether Trump's team is ready to take over the sprawling federal government. Many agencies will head into the weekend with vacancies for key positions and a perceived lack of direction from transition officials.

His Cabinet nominees have also run into headwinds amid allegations of financial improprieties, physical violence, and concerns about preparation for top-level jobs.

Still, Trump has proven his ability to defy expectations, having vanquished 16 Republican primary rivals only to then pull out an Electoral College win against Hillary Clinton that few professional pollsters had predicted.

His party controls both houses of Congress, easing Trump's efforts to begin implementing his policy agenda as soon as Friday.
