To subscribe, please sign up here (http://bit.ly/ecs1s?utm_source=CSIS+All&utm_campaign=e2014b2c9b-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2017_01_11&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_f326fc46b6-e2014b2c9b-145367789) . ** The Sam Nunn National Security Prize and Lecture ------------------------------------------------------------ Today was an extraordinary day at CSIS. This afternoon marked the inaugural presentation of the Sam Nunn National Security Leadership Prize and Lecture, an award that honors the legacy of former senator Sam Nunn (D-GA) by spotlighting and supporting courageous leaders who demonstrate vision and wisdom in addressing global challenges and who put our nation’s interest ahead of political considerations. Senator Nunn, currently CSIS’s chairman emeritus following his 18 years of service as chairman of the CSIS Board of Trustees, presented the inaugural prize to Secretary of Defense Ash Carter. Carter then delivered the Nunn Lecture, which can be viewed On Demand (https://www.csis.org/events/sam-nunn-national-security-leadership-prize-and-lecture?utm_source=CSIS+All&utm_campaign=e2014b2c9b-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2017_01_11&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_f326fc46b6-e2014b2c9b-145367789) . ** Crossing a Strait Line ------------------------------------------------------------ China sent a group of warships, including its Liaoning aircraft carrier, through the Taiwan Strait—leading Taiwan to scramble jets and its navy in order to follow the Chinese ships. Reuters reports that recent naval exercises by China have “unnerved Beijing’s neighbors.” (http://www.reuters.com/article/us-china-taiwan-carrier-idUSKBN14V061?utm_source=CSIS+All&utm_campaign=e2014b2c9b-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2017_01_11&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_f326fc46b6-e2014b2c9b-145367789) Dive Deeper: See how China’s aircraft carrier compares to other countries’ carriers with this unique deep-dive (http://chinapower.csis.org/aircraft-carrier/?utm_source=CSIS+All&utm_campaign=e2014b2c9b-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2017_01_11&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_f326fc46b6-e2014b2c9b-145367789) (including a 3D tour) from the CSIS China Power project. ** The Russia-NATO A2AD Environment ------------------------------------------------------------ The excellent Missile Threat website from CSIS’s Missile Defense Project has just released an interactive tool (https://missilethreat.csis.org/russia-nato-a2ad-environment/?utm_source=CSIS+All&utm_campaign=e2014b2c9b-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2017_01_11&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_f326fc46b6-e2014b2c9b-145367789) mapping the anti-access/area denial (A2AD) capabilities—the ability to deny an adversary’s forces access to a particular region or otherwise hinder freedom of maneuver—for both the NATO Alliance and Russia. It’s well worth the look. ** In That Number ------------------------------------------------------------ ** 12,192 ------------------------------------------------------------ The number of people of various nationalities that Egypt arrested in 2016 in order to prevent them from illegally entering or leaving the country. We’re now wrapped up in all these different conflicts, at a low level and with no end in sight.” ------------------------------------------------------------ —CSIS’s Jon B. Alterman on President Obama’s foreign policy legacy. You can watch his remarks and those of Senator Nunn on demand here (https://www.csis.org/events/sam-nunn-national-security-leadership-prize-and-lecture?utm_source=CSIS+All&utm_campaign=e2014b2c9b-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2017_01_11&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_f326fc46b6-e2014b2c9b-145367789) .
