4X Parents, Thanks so much to the parents who assisted last week for our Community Service Day at Brightwood - We're told that your children did a wonderful job reading and interacting with the very young students at Brightwood. Here are the reminders for this week. TEACHER CONFERENCES THIS WEEK Please be on time for your assigned time for your conference to be respectful to everyone's schedules. HALLOWEEN PARADE/PARTY THIS FRIDAY Our annual Halloween parade will be at 1:45pm on the LS playground. Afterwards, our class will be treated to a small party. Parents and siblings are welcome, and you will be able to leave with your child afterward, or they may go home in the standard carpool lineup. MATH CLASS -- FOR PARENTS!! (From Merry Adelfio & Raina Fishbane) Several years ago, Sidwell Friends Lower School offered a series called Math Class for Parents. We realized that many parents had questions about how math is now taught at Sidwell Friends School and what they could do to best support their children's learning. We have decided to offer this series of classes again. Beginning Friday, November 5, we will offer a math class for parents the first Friday of every month at 7:45 a.m. in the Math Lab (upstairs in the Manor House). The classes will be: November 5, December 3, January 14 (please note that this class will be on the second Friday of January) and February 4. We may then add one or two additional classes on later. We hope to have the library open early those days for childcare. The classes will focus on the four basic operations: addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. The classes will show how these operations are taught from PK through 6th grade and examples of class lessons will be given. We will also show the most effective ways to help your children with their math homework and more importantly, with their math understanding. Please feel free to come to any or all of the classes and no RSVP is needed. Let us know if you have any questions at fishbaner@sidwell.edu or adelfiom@sidwell.edu. We look forward to seeing many of you on November 5th. Merry & Raina WEDNESDAY MORNING MATH EMAIL LIST Every week, we send out a complete list of the problems and solutions for Wednesday Morning Math, as well as a brief description of what the students will be working on that week. If you would like to be on this e-mail list, whether or not your child attends Wednesday Morning Math, please send me an e-mail at fishbaner@sidwell.edu. CHI (COMMUNITY HEALTH INITIATIVE) NEWS Next week is the start of Fall Parent Peer Group Meetings, where parents from their children's grade gather to discuss their parenting challenges and issue. These gatherings, which focus solely on non-academic issues, are guided by parent facilitators; topics are generated by the parents and often include conversations about playdates, regulating children's "screen time" and juggling extracurricular activities. Parent Peer Group Meetings (all at Lower School from 7:30-9pm) -- Grades 3 and 4 : MONDAY NOV. 1 If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Anne Conlee Mazlish at aconlish@aol.com or Camille Thornton at camillethornton@comcast.net.
