Wednesday - November 3, 2010 From the School FROM LEE PALMER, UPPER SCHOOL PRINCIPAL I’d like to thank the parents who joined us at the “Meet the Administration” meeting on Thursday, October 21. Events like this help build the dialogue that will allow us all to work together in the best interests of the students. I am always looking for ways to expand conversation in the community, so please contact me if you have any suggestions. Parents often ask me how they can best support their children in the context of Sidwell Friends Upper School. We always encourage students to be independent, resilient, and self-advocating. Allowing your son or daughter to address concerns directly with their teachers and/or advisor is usually the best initial course of action. That being said, we know there are times when a student may need help addressing a difficult situation. If you have concerns or questions, contacting the advisor is often the next best step. Parents are welcome to contact teachers, who will do their best to respond within 24 hours, but each classroom teacher does not have the benefit of understanding what is happening in other classes, while the advisor has the global view of your child’s Upper School experience. Students are best supported when we all work as a team, so communication is the key to the best resolution of a problem. Administrators are also always available for support, soplease don’t hesitate to contact us.INFORMATION ON 9TH GRADE PARENT CONFERENCE DAY: FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 12 Teacher conferences for parents of ninth-graders will be held on Friday, November 12. He lived a physically rigorous and healthy lifestyle. After he died of melanoma in 1985, his parents established the Mark Watson Eager ’74 Award to encourage students to engage in physically challenging activities and explore the outdoor world. The recipient of this award receives the opportunity to develop new skills and test themselves in a physically demanding outdoor environment. The Mark Watson Eager Foundation awards a scholarship to one 11th grade student each summer. The grant covers a portion of tuition and travel costs for an excursion lasting three to four weeks. The student must select the program he or she wishes to participate in, which must include a rigorous physical challenge. No past outdoor experience is necessary. Essays and applications for summer 2011 are due by Friday, January 21, 2011 to Lee Palmer, Upper School Principal. The program is open to juniors. Additional information about the application process is attached. In fact, leaf blowers give out 500 times the hydrocarbons a car gives out (California Air Resources Board). Hydrocarbons combine with other pollutants to create ozone. This affects asthmatics and allergy sufferers the most, but also healthy children and adults. Also, blowers often blow fine particles of fertilizers and pesticides from the ground into the air. Raking can be a fun family activity and it burns some serious calories! So, don’t blow it, rake!
