JVC Northwest News Help fill Classrooms, Clinics, and Community Centers Encourage others to become JVs in the Northwest We’re excited to offer 150-160 JV positions this upcoming service year, and to (re)open the Bend, Ore. community! Who do you know that can fill vital positions? Encourage them to apply! Next year, JVs can teach/tutor; provide health services/nursing; offer legal assistance; welcome and orient refugees/immigrants; accompany Indigenous communities; support people with disabilities, addictions, and mental illness; and so much more. The JV Application Deadline is Feb 10 (rolling after that). Give a call, email the Interest Form, grab a coffee, share our Facebook or Instagram post, or send a text- that could be all it takes to encourage someone to apply. Inspire someone today. Crossroads Call for Submissions Send in your FJV Update! Share what's happening in your life by submitting an update to Crossroads! Build a Fulfilling Life After Your JV Service: Techniques to Thrive in Career, Community, and Beyond, by Better Understanding Who You Are Today A workshop for Recent FJVs, Sunday January 29th, 7-8:15 pm, St. Joseph’s Parish, Seattle, Wash. Do you sometimes struggle with how to choose a meaningful career and build a strong community in your post-JV life? Creating your life after being a JV can be “both empowering and frustrating,” as one FJV puts it, but there is a vital step you can take to deepen and streamline your process: stop and take stock of who you are today. This workshop, facilitated by Sara Jones (a former Lutheran Volunteer and Peace Corps Volunteer, and now a professional coach), will help recent FJVs (having served within the last 1-3 years) carve out empowered, self-aware paths for post volunteer life. Light food and drink provided. Click here to get more information. RSVP for this event to Zach at outreach@jvcnorthwest.org (space is limited). Juneau JV & FJV Potluck Sunday, February 12th, 6:30 pm, Shrine of St. Therese, Juneau, Alaska Juneau area FJVs are invited to break bread with the Alaska JVs during their Winter Retreat at the Shrine. Share a meal and fellowship with Jesuit Volunteers currently serving in Juneau, Sitka, Anchorage, and Bethel. RSVP to Alaska Program Coordinator Grace Badik at gbadik@jvcnorthwest.org with number of people coming and what dish you’re bringing to share. Please keep the sharing dishes vegetarian. Events, Resources, & Reflections Celebrating Brigid of Kildare: Annual St. Brigid Day Saturday February 11, 5:30 pm, Agape Community, Ware, Mass. Brigid of Kildare, revered in Irish and Celtic history as the mid-wife of Mary and the God-Mother of Jesus, is one of the most potent symbols of Christian womanhood for all times, whose life is packed with ancient tales, whose soul life gives impetus to women in a church still learning how to integrate their gifts. Mystic poet, light-bringer in the darkness of winter, Brigid protects land and harvest. The event offers an opening bonfire, evening of song, prayer, poetry and homage to St. Brigid , the spirituality of women and a turning toward the season of spring. As participants slowly walk the path, often to the sound of an Irish drum or Bodhrain, guided by candle luminaries, they arrive at Brigid House, to dedicate ourselves as peacemakers. Click here for more information. Walking in the footsteps of Jesus: A Pilgrimage to the Holy Land May 14-27, 2017 Sponsored by the Loyola Institute for Spirituality, this Pilgrimage to the Holy Land, under the Guidance of Fr. Felix Just, S.J. and Ms. Gail Gresser, will take travelers on a journey to discover why the Holy Land is often called the "Living Bible." Getting to know the land where Jesus lived helps participants to understand his teachings more clearly, know and love him more intimately, and follow him more faithfully. This Biblical pilgrimage will explore the land of Jesus with stops in Caesarea, Cana, Nazareth, the Sea of Galilee, Jerusalem, and many other places of Biblical importance. Click here for more information. AVE provides a reflective space to integrate the volunteer experience and discern future directions in life and ministry. The program includes room, board, and meals for 1-3 months in Southern New Mexico, intentional community with Sisters of Charity, program structure customized to participant's needs, weekly volunteer experience at the US-Mexico border, spiritual direction and overall health counseling, and career planning and development. Catholic Volunteer Network Discernment Retreats Catholic Volunteer Network (CVN) now hosts discernment retreats for current volunteers and alumni who are contemplating their next steps. Join CVN for a weekend retreat and enjoy the opportunity to get away from the busyness of life and join with others in the spirit of discernment. These retreats are made available free of charge thanks to the support of the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation. Travel stipends are also available. Retreats will take place all across the U.S. in the upcoming months. Click here for more details. JVC Northwest Recommends Below are things being discussed in the JVC Northwest community.
