To subscribe, please sign up here (http://bit.ly/ecs1s?utm_source=CSIS+All&utm_campaign=e2ab381522-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2017_01_12&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_f326fc46b6-e2ab381522-145367789) . ** General Mattis on Capitol Hill ------------------------------------------------------------ Defense secretary nominee James Mattis today ranked Russia and the national debt as top threats to US national security and said that President Obama’s nuclear deal with Iran was “imperfect” but must be enforced, as Yahoo News’s Olivier Knox reports (https://www.yahoo.com/news/defense-secretary-pick-mattis-says-russia-top-threat-will-enforce-iran-deal-185357939.html?utm_source=CSIS+All&utm_campaign=e2ab381522-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2017_01_12&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_f326fc46b6-e2ab381522-145367789) . Dive Deeper: CSIS chairman emeritus, former senator Sam Nunn (D-GA), today introduced secretary of defense nominee General James Mattis to the Senate Armed Services Committee for his confirmation hearing, and yesterday he introduced secretary of state nominee Rex Tillerson (a CSIS trustee) for his confirmation hearing before the Senate Foreign Affairs Committee. A transcript of Senator Nunn’s remarks can be accessed here (https://www.csis.org/csis-chairman-emeritus-and-former-senator-sam-nunns-introduction-james-mattis-and-rex-tillerson?utm_source=CSIS+All&utm_campaign=e2ab381522-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2017_01_12&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_f326fc46b6-e2ab381522-145367789) . And, CSIS trustee and former secretary of defense William S. Cohen today also introduced General Mattis before the Senate Armed Services Committee. Video of Secretary Cohen’s remarks can be accessed here (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=980oJ3XZvzo&feature=youtu.be&utm_source=CSIS+All&utm_campaign=e2ab381522-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2017_01_12&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_f326fc46b6-e2ab381522-145367789) . ** High-stakes Missile Standoff ------------------------------------------------------------ With NATO-Russia relations at their lowest point in decades, the two former Cold War adversaries are in a tense standoff over missile defense. In recent years, Russia established a dense thicket of overlapping missile and missile defense systems with ranges that jut into NATO territory. Those systems could hinder NATO’s access to the territory in which it operates—akin to a 21st century moat around a castle. In defense jargon, it’s a strategy known as anti-access/area denial, or A2/AD. And it’s a top worry for NATO commanders as Foreign Policy’s Robbie Gamer reports (http://foreignpolicy.com/2017/01/12/nato-russia-missile-defense-stand-off-deterrence-anti-access-area-denial/?utm_source=CSIS+All&utm_campaign=e2ab381522-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2017_01_12&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_f326fc46b6-e2ab381522-145367789) . Dive Deeper: See CSIS’s Missile Defense Project’s Missile Threat interactive website is currently featuring “The Russia-NATO A2AD Environment (https://missilethreat.csis.org/?utm_source=CSIS+All&utm_campaign=e2ab381522-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2017_01_12&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_f326fc46b6-e2ab381522-145367789) .” ** North Korea Updates ------------------------------------------------------------ The US has announced sanctions against North Korean government agencies and senior officials—among them leader Kim Jong-un’s sister, Kim Yo Jong—in response to Pyongyang’s human rights abuses and censorship activities, as AFP reports (http://www.asianage.com/world/americas/130117/us-adds-kim-jong-uns-sister-to-sanctions-list.html?utm_source=CSIS+All&utm_campaign=e2ab381522-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2017_01_12&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_f326fc46b6-e2ab381522-145367789) . Commercial satellite imagery shows that North Korea has been progressively modernizing its emergency airfield capabilities since late 2015 by adapting highways for use as airstrips, building aircraft shelters, and developing contingency airfields, as IHS Jane’s Defence Weekly’s Joseph Bermudez reports (http://www.janes.com/article/66922/north-korea-strengthens-its-emergency-airfield-capabilities?utm_source=CSIS+All&utm_campaign=e2ab381522-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2017_01_12&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_f326fc46b6-e2ab381522-145367789) . Dive Deeper: See the CSIS Korea Chair Snapshot “US Government Sanctions Second Member of the Kim Family (https://www.csis.org/analysis/us-government-sanctions-second-member-kim-family?utm_source=CSIS+All&utm_campaign=e2ab381522-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2017_01_12&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_f326fc46b6-e2ab381522-145367789) .” ** In That Number ------------------------------------------------------------ ** 91.6% ------------------------------------------------------------ The percentage of North Korean respondents who said they consume foreign media at least once each month, according to polling released by CSIS’s Beyond Parallel team (http://beyondparallel.csis.org/information-and-its-consequences-in-north-korea/?utm_source=CSIS+All&utm_campaign=e2ab381522-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2017_01_12&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_f326fc46b6-e2ab381522-145367789) . ** Critical Quote ------------------------------------------------------------ ** “Xi Jinping will not be seen as weak and soft in the face of pressure from the United States, so I really do worry about an early crisis with China. China is not going to allow the United States to deny it access to what it sees as its own territory.” ------------------------------------------------------------ —CSIS’s Bonnie S. Glaser on US-China relations and the South China Sea.
