Seung Min writes, "House leadership plans to move as early as next week on legislation to override Obama's actions that could protect millions of undocumented immigrants from deportations. That move is likely to be paired with spending for the Department of Homeland Security, which got only short-term funding from an agreement in December. The GOP strategy - emerging just one day after Republicans officially took over both chambers of Congress - follows through on the party's promise last year to strike back at Obama on immigration. Republicans chose to defer that fight to early this year, when the GOP would be in complete power." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=7c9b501ec25be745e248c20b0d4ed516561e38df0581c059e99298e735a3acba http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=7c9b501ec25be745e248c20b0d4ed516561e38df0581c059e99298e735a3acba THE SCRAMBLE TO SAVE A KEYSTONE VOTE. Andrew Restuccia reports, "The main Republican and Democrat who support the pipeline met the past two days to plot a strategy for the bill's passage. Lead sponsors Sens. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) and John Hoeven (R-N.D.) say there are three potential ways to get the pipeline through Congress, each with its own major hurdles. The first is to win enough support for the bill to override a presidential veto. That requires a hefty 67 votes in the Senate, and so far, the bill has an estimated 63 supporters. Corralling four other 'yes' votes will prove to be a difficult, and perhaps impossible, task. And Hoeven is the first to acknowledge the challenge." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=7c9b501ec25be7458635b5c22c4ae812afc5b517af7b906cce5887c4c89d8219 http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=7c9b501ec25be7458635b5c22c4ae812afc5b517af7b906cce5887c4c89d8219 BOEHNER'S REVENGE MIGHT ULTIMATELY NOT LAST THAT LONG. Jake reports, "Some lawmakers and aides close to Boehner say Rep. Richard Nugent (R-Fla.) might win back his prized seat on the elite, speaker-appointed Rules Committee, and Reps. Mark Meadows (R-N.C.) and Scott Garrett (R-N.J.) may even get to chair subcommittees on other panels, even though all three voted against Boehner. Senior GOP leadership aides say no final decisions have been made, but the prospect of letting the dissenters off easy is galling to some of the speaker's closest allies, who want blood - and seem angry he isn't willing to spill it." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=7c9b501ec25be745203d7b9f1b1bb6bfd2d780faa1820b4462fc01584bd7ac0f http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=7c9b501ec25be745203d7b9f1b1bb6bfd2d780faa1820b4462fc01584bd7ac0f FORMER GOVERNOR MOORE DIES. The Associated Press reports on the life of Former Gov. Arch Alfred Moore Jr., "whose guilty pleas to federal corruption charges overshadowed his record as his era's most successful Republican in Democrat-dominated West Virginia, died Wednesday. He was 91. The three-term governor, congressman, state legislator, and father of U.S. Sen. Shelley Moore Capito, R-W.Va., died Wednesday evening in Charleston 'with his family by his side,' according to a news release from Capito's office." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=7c9b501ec25be745240e136bfceac7f521eee10a7b1406dddc972de6925e304c http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=7c9b501ec25be745240e136bfceac7f521eee10a7b1406dddc972de6925e304c GOOD THURSDAY MORNING, January 8, 2015. Welcome to the Huddle, your play-by-play guide to everything Capitol Hill. The bitter cold and poor commute of the last few days has me wondering how many days until summer. How are you staying warm? Send tips to mailto:lfrench@politico.com lfrench@politico.com and follow along on Twitter @ http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=7c9b501ec25be7458f4a2f18d749a6d06d2ddee9feeb5ba3b88928d6c854c498 laurennfrench . Orrin Hatch is now walking around with a little extra company: A security detail. Hatch, who claimed the president pro tempore from Sen. Patrick Leahy, is now in the presidential line of succession and said he still has lots of privacy and called his detail "very accommodating" as he walked to the Senate subway under escort. But he cracked that the Capitol Police that tail him everywhere now might get a little bored. "I feel sorry for them," he added. THERE'S SOMETHING IN THE WATER IN OHIO. Niraj Chokshi writes for the Washington Post, "The birthplace of aviation, it turns out, is also the birthplace of senators.Ohio has produced more senators than any other state over the past 100 years, according to a review of data by Eric Ostermeier, a research associate at the University of Minnesota's Humphrey School of Public Affairs who writes at the Smart Politics blog. And all but one Ohio senator over the past century - or 96 percent - were born in that state." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=7c9b501ec25be74598294222acbfe7b87a9c7bd6646395ba5959ba6277a19ee5 http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=7c9b501ec25be74598294222acbfe7b87a9c7bd6646395ba5959ba6277a19ee5 TRANSITIONS. Dan Kotman, most recently communications director for Rep. Michele Bachmann, has joined Rep. Tim Walberg office to head up their communications shop. And Manu had the scoop on the new chief of staff for Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid who "plans to shake up his senior staff with the selection of the chamber's former top law enforcement official to serve as his new chief aide, according to several sources familiar with the matter. Reid, a Nevada Democrat facing reelection in 2016, will name Drew Willison, the Senate's former sergeant-at-arms, to replace David Krone, who has led the office since the aftermath of the 2010 elections." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=7c9b501ec25be7452e789b2bb2313c2f5c662f7cdb20678145bb5a7fca49cddd http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=7c9b501ec25be7452e789b2bb2313c2f5c662f7cdb20678145bb5a7fca49cddd LYNCH NOMINATIONS COULD COME THIS MONTH. Seung Min reports, "Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley plans to hold confirmation hearings for attorney general nominee Loretta Lynch in the last week of January or the beginning of February, an aide said...The nomination of Lynch, who was chosen late last year to replace outgoing Attorney General Eric Holder, will be one of the highest-profile confirmations that the new GOP majority in the Senate will take up early this year." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=7c9b501ec25be745b1239fe4c563b42f8d4cd0e24faef3522587ae33693291e5 http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=7c9b501ec25be745b1239fe4c563b42f8d4cd0e24faef3522587ae33693291e5 THE UPCOMING FREE TRADE BATTLE. From Reuters, "Supporters and critics of free trade are readying for a bitter battle this year over major free trade deals and legislation to fast-track trade agreements through the U.S. Congress. A bill to give the White House fast-track power, allowing Congress a yes-or-no vote on trade deals in exchange for setting negotiating goals, did not advance in the last Congress but new legislation will be introduced in 2015. Unions, progressive lawmakers, consumer advocates, environmentalists and social justice and human rights lobbyists will kick off a campaign on Thursday to oppose fast-track." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=7c9b501ec25be745d2cdeb333cf9eef3aa8001047bf7560941a900993167d3a0 http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=7c9b501ec25be745d2cdeb333cf9eef3aa8001047bf7560941a900993167d3a0 GRIMM DONORS: WE'D DO IT AGAIN. Sam Stein and Paul Blumenthal write for the Huffington Post on the 200 people who donated to embattled former Rep. Michael Grimm's campaign in 2014, "even after he had been indicted on charges of tax fraud. They helped the Staten Island congressman sustain a bid for re-election even as the rest of the political world ran far away and legal threats engulfed his political future. And though he won, they watched as he turned around less than two months later, pleaded guilty to the charges and resigned from his seat. Having gone through a high-profile political jilting, these people might reasonably feel aggrieved, misled or just desirous of a refund. But in interviews this past week, none of those reached by The Huffington Post expressed animus toward Grimm for taking their donations to gain another term and then abruptly leaving office." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=7c9b501ec25be74540a8d21bfbaa931cb36708ed24c523aab8a5bec3a0252d62 http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=7c9b501ec25be74540a8d21bfbaa931cb36708ed24c523aab8a5bec3a0252d62 WALTER JONES AND THE CODELS. The Washington Post writes, that Rep. Walter Jones introduced legislation that "requires the government to disclose how much it costs to fly members of Congress and their staff on overseas "fact-finding" missions....Reporting on those congressional delegation trips, affectionately known as codels, is one of our favorite pastimes, but, as the congressman's effort underscores, it's difficult to get a full picture of what these trips entail - and cost." http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=7c9b501ec25be745d10c5a8bc17ed327d6084ef53fdd86e65360a81447cb117b http://go.politicoemail.com/?qs=7c9b501ec25be745d10c5a8bc17ed327d6084ef53fdd86e65360a81447cb117b WEDNESDAY'S TRIVIA WINNER - Michael Toulouza was the first to correctly answer that it took 33 days for the Senate to first achieve quorum. TODAY'S TRIVIA - Michael has today's question: Who is the only person to be elected governor of two different US States? The first person to correctly answer gets a mention in the next day's Huddle.
