Allan Butler is VP of Documentary Films at National Geographic. He was diagnosed with advanced Stage IV Pancreatic Cancer. This therapy is a direct injection into the tumor of his own dendritic cells, which are master immune cells, obtained by a blood draw. It works by harnessing the whole immune system to attack the all of the biomarkers on the tumor at once in the natural way the immune system works to rid the body of ANY foreign invader, so the cancer cannot evade and metastasize like it does with chemo and radiation. They have had great success with treating stage IV sarcoma, lung cancers, ovarian cancers and colon cancers from the data they have released so far. This product also has no toxicity, and several of the DC Vax - L patients are still alive after 12 and 13 years. They have a very high rate of over 5 year survival – more than any other treatment. They have the product in PH III trial at about 70 locations around the world. It requires surgically removing the tumor tissue which is used to make a personalized vaccine (again, no toxic materials are used, only the patient’s own tumor tissue and dendritic cells) and then injected in the arm like a flu shot. The dendritic cells educate the rest of the immune system to attack the tumor. I have met several of the patients who have had this treatment, and you would never know they had a brain tumor. A patient can now go to London or Germany and have this treatment, and I believe it is available in the U.S. as well.

The beauty of these treatments is that absolutely no harm will come to the patients from using them, and they appear to have far better survival than standard therapies. Other new immune therapies that try to pick one or a few biomarkers to target end up having very severe adverse events and toxicity. She has developed something very unique.
