Tuesday - January 6, 2015 Principal's Letter NOTES FROM SALLY Announcements INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC NOTES CALLING MS STUDENTS - JOIN THE BSU PRODUCTION Other QUAKER LIFE QUESTIONS & ANSWERS MS NEWSLETTER INFORMATION News Around the School Principal's Letter NOTES FROM SALLY This week’s query: What is honesty and how can you remember to tell the truth? Assembly: 37th Street Players (8th grade Drama scenes). The Sidwell Friends snow emergency policy may be found on page 3 of the Student Directory as well as in the Handbook for Parents and Students. Please familiarize yourselves with the procedures so that you know what to expect. Has your address, phone number, email information, or emergency contact information changed? Please update your information through the Parent Portal! We want to know how to reach you. 8th grade parents, please note the upcoming dates that were circulated by the grade reps over break. The Curriculum Meeting on Monday, February 2, is an especially important program for you to attend. For several years, Educational Records Bureau (ERB) has offered schools the option of testing online. Given that SATs will be given online in the near future the Middle School will again take advantage of this option this year. Fifth through eighth graders will take the tests in their homeroom/advisory on their laptops Tuesday, February 3, through Thursday, February 5. As in the past, students will take Verbal Reasoning, Reading Comprehension, Writing Concepts, Quantitative Reasoning, and Math Achievement subtests. Should a student be ill and miss a test, there will be limited opportunity to make up the test on Friday of the testing week. As with the paper and pencil version, the best preparation for the testing sessions is a good night’s sleep followed by a nutritious breakfast. Teachers will assign light homework and no tests, quizzes, projects, or papers due that week. Parents will receive results in the mail by the first week of March. It is important to remember that standardized test scores are only one measure of a student’s academic profile - a snapshot, if you will. A more complete and accurate picture emerges when the scores are combined with classwork, daily performance, regular assignments, projects, and tests. Still, the test results can help parents and teachers understand more clearly and completely a child’s balance of strengths and needs. Teachers may review the scores in detail, looking for patterns that emerge from one year to the next, and then use that information to be more effective in the classroom. Happy New Year to all! Announcements INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC NOTES 5/6 Orchestra: All instrumentalists rehearse Wednesday at rehearsal period. Friday - handchime choir and violin soloist during DEAR period. Students of the Middle School who would like to participate in this year’s Black Student Union (BSU) production (February 11, 12, and 13) should let Julia Porter (porterj@sidwell.edu) know as soon as possible. Rehearsals begin on Saturday, January 10. Please note - because of the short notice, if you can’t make this Saturday’s rehearsal, that’s okay - please still consider signing up! You do not have to be a member of the BSU and ANY Middle School student is welcome to be a part of this play. This year’s theme is “Struggles and Victories.” Students will express this theme through both personal and collective points of view. As in past years, rehearsals will take place every weekend from mid-January to mid-February (preliminary schedule listed below). During performance week there are dress rehearsals on Monday and Tuesday evenings. This year, performances take place on Wednesday, February 11, at 9:00 a.m. at the Lower School and at 2:25 p.m. at the Upper School, and on Friday, February 13, at 2:35 p.m. at the Middle School. The preliminary schedule for rehearsals and performances is listed below. Where are the Quakers?" The Quaker Oats man is an image of a historic Quaker man in plain dress, a traditional Quaker witness for simplicity. The 16th-18th centuries in Britain were a time of vast income and wealth disparity, and people signaled their status with things like handmade lace cuffs or solid gold buttons. Quakers believed then, as now, that all humans are equal. They believed that wearing fancy clothes made people feel superior to and different from others when really they weren’t, and that that got in the way of appreciating That of God inside others. So Quakers as a group adopted Plain Dress - the blue jeans and T-shirts of the 16th century - as a way of witnessing against (i.e. protesting) status-conscious clothing. Today we find most modern Quakers wearing clothing that is not ostentatious, interpreting the idea of plain dress in various ways. It is rare for modern Quaker men to wear the plain dress of the Quaker Oats man, who is a food brand symbol in the manner of the Aunt Jemima Syrup woman.
