I was talking with my Tulane roommates the other day about listening to The Byrds during Crescent City afternoons in the 90s—the music is utterly timeless. I listened to it this morning on the way to the pool. It was 64 degrees in DC this morning with no humidity and the sun was shining brightly—just like LA. A big smile for me. “8 Miles High” is a song that has touched my soul from the first time I heard it as a youngster in the 70s. There was something magical about it, immediately. The original version was released as a single and featured on my favorite Byrds record, 1966’s “Fifth Dimension.” The song is actually about the band’s flight to London in 1965 and their tour of England that year. But I get lost in it and to me it could be about traveling anywhere (the lyric “8 Miles High” refers to a jetliner’s altitude which is actually 6-7 miles high—eight just sounded better in verse.) To me, this song is one of the best of all time—Rolling Stone agrees, it’s listed at number 151 out of RS’ 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. I’d put it much higher...8 miles higher. In addition to the original 1966 version, I love the live track of “8 Miles High (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ymkBEhdHBE&utm_source=CSIS+All&utm_campaign=c4362a32de-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2017_06_26&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_f326fc46b6-c4362a32de-145367789) ” The Byrds recorded for their “Live at Royal Albert Hall 1971.” But I love this video version captured live from the Fillmore East in September of 1970 even more. Like “Live at Royal Albert Hall” it’s an instrumental version of the song. And it is exquisite.
