Hunter, I sent the below message to your brother tonight, but in truth it applies equally to you--the base of his support, be it personal or political. I hope that with everything else going to you take a moment to appreciate the legacy you and your brother left over the last eight years. You never take the credit you deserve, but that doesn't change the fact that those of us who were along for the ride see your impact on everything Beau does. You guys have a lot to be proud of, and you deserve to be reminded of it. ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Alexander S. Mackler <smacklera@gmail.com> Date: Tue, Jan 6, 2015 at 10:12 PM Subject: 8 years To: JRB3 <261penn@gmail.com>, Hallie Biden <halliebiden@gmail.com> Beau & Hallie, As you prepare for your first full day out of office, it's an appropriate time to take stock of all you accomplished. I don't mean that in the prism we normally view accomplishments--politically. Rather, in the way that really matters: a difference to the people you served and a legacy left for the future. Above and beyond taking violent criminals off the streets and making improvements to state laws that will never be reversed (things many AGs say they've done), your impact was farther and wider than we could've hoped in 2006. There isn't another prosecutor in the country who did more for his state in the aftermath of the worst financial crisis of our lifetimes. You made senior abuse a priority for your state. You shut down countless blighted properties around the state. You convicted hundreds of child predators and saved many more kids from the worst horrors imaginable. And tens of thousands of students are safer because you, personally, visited them in school and enlightened them as to the dangers around them. If that's not public service of the highest order, I don't know what is. But even more impressive are the changes you made that will outlast all of us. The Family Unit and the services it provides those most in need. And particularly the Child Predator Unit--the idea that was somehow controversial in 2006 has become a shining star, a national example, and something that will save kids from monsters for long after your time as AG. The list, and your legacy, goes on and on. To say nothing of the thongs of people, of all ages around the country, whom you've inspired through your public service (and excellent convention speeches). Whether we are watching you be sworn in as Governor Biden in two years, or if you decide your calling is to make a mark in private practice and earn the money you deserve, nothing will diminish all you've accomplished over the better part of the last decade. And most importantly, having done so in a time of great personal challenge (be it deployment or hospital visits). There is an old Victorian poem that I thought personified my dad. It ends: "It matters not how straight the gait; how charged with punishments the scroll; I am the master of my fate; I am the captain of my soul." For the last eight years--publicly and personally--you've been the master of your own fate, serving your state and country with integrity and honesty. And you've set an incredible example for all of us who've been along for the ride. It's been an enormous pleasure to watch. I hope you know that as you start this new phase. Love ya. -- Alexander Snyder Mackler (302) 598-8678 -- Alexander Snyder Mackler (302) 598-867
