Colleagues, I've attached a short meeting memo and deposited several new documents in the Drop Box. Please let me know if you have access problems to the DropBox. Below is the memo, which is also attached. I am writing to preview several matters for discussion and decision during the board meeting. First, we are 219 days until the opening of BCSB, when 264 boys and their families will begin a unique and important journey towards college and success in life. *Guests at the meeting:* We have several guests who have been invited to the meeting, joining our planning and implementation team as partners: *Ms. Desiree Sterling* has joined our team as the administrative intern. She’s a senior at UMBC. (invited) *Ms. Jenny DuFresne,* subject to funding, will join our team as a consultant providing project management services and co-leading implementation of several urgent operational tasks such as staff recruitment, student services such as food, transportation and information technology and teacher compensation. Jenny founded the first all-boys charter school in Washington, D.C. and has been a consultant to the Foundation on the recruiting of a Principal and researched and drafted the Title IX report we submitted to the Federal Department of Education. *Mr. Sam Palokoff * has been engaged as the consultant to the Foundation on the School Construction Project. Sam is a real estate developer and, working closely with Kate Jordan and me, will direct all phases of the pre-development and construction of the School Site. *Mr. Charles Alexander*, the founder of Alexander Design Studio, has been engaged as the architect on the School Construction Project. *Ms. Jessica (Jess) Damseaux *is an associate in Alexander Design Studio. *Work Plan and Working Committees: * We have a broad range of projects to complete over the next six months. Several projects require significant time and effort: Curriculum design and planning, Student services (transportation, food, information technology), staff recruiting, teacher compensation and other operational tasks that will require strategic planning and execution. The tasks for the working committees, which will include volunteers, will be integrated into the work plan to be developed by Jenny and me. The proposed working committees, proposed by Chike Aguh, are Operations, Academic Affairs and Programming and Stakeholder Engagement Committee. (Details in DropBox) *Operations* We are in an operational mode, meaning that implementation of the School Design is underway and unfolding everyday. The operational planning and implentation team will continue to grow with volunteers and consultants, perhaps using the Committee structure proposed above for setting goals and reaching milestones. *Finance* Under Josh Eastright’s leadership as the Treasurer and Finance Committee Chair, we continue to make steady progress towards understanding the challenges in making sound financial and budgetary decisions. EdOps is fully engaged in budget planning and financial management activities. We need to discuss and affirm several contracts with consultants for Operations, School Construction Project, and Athletic Programming. *Procurement Policy * The Procurement Policy (in DropBox) was submitted to North Avenue in December. The School Board needs to approve this policy as a waiver from its standard procurement policy. The policy is now under review by BCPS Legal Department. It is expected that the policy will be affirmed by the School Board at a meeting later this month. The minutes must note that the Foundation Board has approved the policy. *DoE Start-up Funding* We are waiting for a signed Special Conditions statement from the School District. Once signed, we will finalize submission of the documents requested by the DoE. The board will be briefed on the timing for funding from DoE. *Collegiate Teaching Fellows* The Collegiate Teaching Fellows program is a high-impact, high value initiative that distinguishes our program from any other school in Baltimore City, perhaps the country. This agenda item is a priority because of a potential partnership with a real estate developer who proposes to design and build a dormitory-style housing unit for Collegiate Teaching Fellows at a site close to the School Building.
