A friend of mine’s son just got home the other day from his first year at NYU’s undergraduate film school. He’s a smart kid and I always like talking with him about film and culture.

I wasn’t surprised when he told me that, even though he spends time attending lectures by filmmakers Martin Scorsese and Spike Lee, it is premium television that has now captured the cultural zeitgeist. We spent some time talking about HBO’s masterpiece, “The Night Of,” and how its eight episodes basically added up to an extended eight hour long film.

Another premium television series I am fascinated by is the Starz hit, “Outlander” which is the epic story of a World War II nurse, Claire Randle, who in 1945 finds herself transported back to the Scotland of 1743. Spoiler Alert! Stop reading here if you don’t want any further details about “Outlander” during season two.

In season two, Claire is transported back from the mid-1700s to Scotland in the mid-1960s. And that’s when the show’s music score gets really good. First, the soundtrack spins the “King of Rock and Soul,” Solomon Burke’s classic “Baby, Come on Home” and then…then another stunning piece of music seeps into the score. It’s the Four Tops’ “Reach Out, I’ll Be There (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c56Sj7kMbLk&feature=youtu.be&utm_source=CSIS+All&utm_campaign=27f05af6fa-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2017_06_06&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_f326fc46b6-27f05af6fa-145367789) .” It absolutely gave me the chills. This is some of the best music ever created.
