Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz won her Democratic primary tonight, outlasting a challenger who raised more than $3.3 million, much of it from Bernie Sanders supporters seeking to defeat the former Democratic National Committee chairwoman.

Wasserman Schultz, a six-term congresswoman, had 58 percent of the vote in Florida's 23rd District, with 56 percent of precincts reporting, when The Associated Press called the race. Tim Canova, a law professor, had 43 percent of the vote.

Canova leapt into the national spotlight after Sanders sent out fundraising emails on his behalf earlier this year. But he was unable to overcome Wasserman Schultz's standing back home, in a district Hillary Clinton won overwhelmingly in the Democratic presidential primary.

Wasserman Schultz's leadership of the DNC had angered the Sanders campaign, and leaked emails showing top DNC officials criticizing the Vermont senator and discussing ways to undermine his campaign kicked Sanders backers into a frenzy.

But Wasserman Schultz called in her own reinforcements, including endorsements from President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden. The super PAC Patriot Majority PAC spent $640,000 to back her.
