UPPER SCHOOL PARENT GRADE-WIDE GATHERINGS Other Sorry, no news is available at this time. News Around the School US NEWS MS NEWS LS NEWS Principal's Letter MESSAGE FROM MAMADOU Dear Friends, Welcome back! Faculty and staff have been busy at school these past couple of weeks getting prepared for the return of our students. We are all eager to have them back on campus! By now, students should have resolved any issues around their course schedules. If there are any lingering questions or problems about student schedules, please contact Assistant Principal/Academic Dean Min Kim at kimm@sidwell.edu. Please be aware that September 23 is the last day to drop a class without a Withdraw Pass or Withdraw Fail appearing on the transcript. A student who is feeling uncertain about a course should speak with his or her teacher and Min Kim within the first two weeks of the school year. Questions regarding PE sign-ups should be directed to Susannah Parker, Administrative Assistant for PE/Athletics at parkers@sidwell.edu. Fall teams have already begun preseason practice, and coaches will let their athletes know what their regular practice schedule will be. PE classes begin September 12. Uniforms for PE classes are not required. Students should speak with their PE teachers about appropriate attire. Just a few general reminders: Attendance: If your child needs to miss school due to illness, please e-mail USAttendance@sidwell.edu to notify us. Early dismissal requests for doctor’s appointments should also be sent to USAttendance@sidwell.edu. If your child is experiencing a serious illness or medical issue, please contact nurse Jasmin Whitfield at whitfieldj@sidwell.edu. Parking Garage: Please use caution when driving in the garage. As you know, it is very full and busy during morning drop-off. Please drive slowly and yield to pedestrians. First Day of School: Students have been e-mailed the schedule for the first day of school. We will begin the morning with donuts, followed by Meeting for Worship so we can gather once again as a community to share and reflect as we begin the new school year. Students will then attend their classes on a shortened schedule, followed by grade-level activities. Students should be aware that the first day of school is also picture day. Please mark your calendars for Back-to-School Night on September 22 at 6:00 p.m. I look forward to seeing you all back on campus! Warmly, Mamadou Mamadou Guèye Upper School Principal Announcements ADMISSIONS 2016/17 The Office of Admissions and Financial Aid has shifted its timeline a bit this year in order to better serve all of the families that come through our process. Please see below for the basic changes; we will share more soon on the Admissions section of the website. The online application for the 2017/18 school year will be available starting September 1, 2016, at http://www.sidwell.edu/admissions/application-materials/index.aspx. The deadline to submit Part I of the application form if you are applying a sibling or if you are a member of the faculty/staff is October 1, 2016, with all supplementary material due by November 18. Families-at-large may apply with Part I until December 15, and should have Part II completed by January 15, 2017. If you have additional questions, please contact the Admissions Office at 202-537-8111. We look forward to working with your family this admissions season. UPPER SCHOOL PARENTS ASSOCIATION E-MAILS If you have not received an e-mail from one of your grade representatives letting you know about upcoming events, including the parent receptions on Friday, please check to make sure your e-mail address is correct in your Household Information. To do this, log on to the Parent Portal section of the website and go to Update Household Information. If your e-mail address is accurate on this page and you have not received an e-mail, please contact Kathi Webb at webbk@sidwell.edu so we can sort it out. PICTURE DAYS Reminder: school pictures for 6th and 8th grade and all Upper School students will be taken on Tuesday, September 6. Events "A NIGHT FOR SCHOLARS": AVAILABLE PARTIES There are still tickets available to upcoming parties from last year's spring fundraiser, A Night for Scholars. If you're interested in purchasing a ticket to any of the following parties listed below, please contact Jessie Jacobson, Director of Special Events, at jacobsonj@sidwell.edu. To view a full description of these parties with ticket prices, please click here. All proceeds benefit student financial aid at Sidwell Friends. If you have already signed up to attend a party from A Night for Scholars, please stay tuned for an e-mail reminder from the party host coming soon. Thank you for your support of our efforts to raise money for student financial aid. Decision 2016: Journalists and Insiders Dinner Monday, September 19, 2016 Hosted by Nancy Jacobson and Mark Penn Beer Sampling and Dinner Friday, January 27, 2017 Hosted by Ivy and Horace Howells '86 Texas Hold 'Em Saturday, February 4, 2017 Co-hosted by Marla and Barry Back & Mei Xu and Alessandro Rebucci Back by Demand: Wine Tasting February 2017---date to be announced six weeks in advance Co-hosted by Liz and Nick Baldick & Kristin Mannion and H.P. Goldfield CHINA IN 2016: HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVES FROM SPECIALISTS Discussion panel on September 14, 7:00 to 8:30 p.m., Robert L. Smith Meeting Room This roundtable brings two former Zeidman lecturers---historian Jeffrey Wasserstrom and journalist Mei Fong---back to campus to join with others in a lively exchange of ideas. The theme of the session, inspired in part by 2016 being the 50th anniversary of the start of the Cultural Revolution and the 40th anniversary of Mao's death, is to look at how China has and hasn't changed since previous years ending with the numeral six. The panelists will make the case for the value---due to connections, continuities, contrasts, or a bit of each---in looking back from 2016 to one earlier year with a six at its end. After hearing from Wasserstrom (on echoes of 1946) and Fong (on continuities and ruptures since 2006), as well as thoughts on other “six" years from former Far Eastern Economic Review reporter and Congressional Research Service staffer Susan Lawrence, Richard McGregor of the Financial Times, we will move swiftly to questions and comments from the audience and a freeflowing exchange of opinions. The panel will be moderated by China analyst and Sidwell Friends parent Bill Bishop '86. The event runs from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. on September 14 and is open to the public. Mei Fong is the author of One Child: The Story of China’s Most Radical Experiment, on the effects of China’s one-child policy. She is currently a fellow at the New America Foundation and taught at the University of Southern California’s Annenberg School. Prior to that, she was a Wall Street Journal China correspondent. She delivered the 34th Annual John Fisher Zeidman '79 Memorial Lecture. Susan Lawrence, former U.S. New & World Report Beijing Bureau Chief and former Senior China Correspondent for the Far Eastern Economic Review, is now Specialist in Asian Affairs at the Library of Congress Congressional Research Service. Jeffrey Wasserstrom is Chancellor’s Professor of History at UC Irvine, the editor fo the just-released Oxford Illustrated History of Modern China, and the author of books such as China in the 21st Century: What Everyone Needs to Know and, most recently, Eight Juxtapositions: China through Imperfect Analogies. NEXT-TO-NEW SALE COLLECTIONS AND VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES Sidwell Friends’ popular sale of quality used items is back, and we need your help to make this event more successful than ever! The Next-to-New Sale will be held October 14-16 in Wannan Gym on the Wisconsin Avenue campus. All net proceeds directly benefit student financial aid at Sidwell Friends. All items unfit for sale are recycled. All unsold items benefit local charities. We need your donations! Collection times at the Wisconsin Avenue campus will run Wednesday, September 7, to Saturday, October 1, on Mondays and Wednesdays from 8:00-10:00 a.m., and Saturdays from 9:00-11:00 a.m. To view a list of acceptable donations, please click here. For a copy of the donation receipt for tax purposes, please click here. We need volunteers! There are volunteer jobs for everyone at Next-to-New. We need volunteers to organize, price, and set up donations for display, to serve as cashiers at the sale, to assist with Charity Day, and for sale breakdown. You can spend as much time helping as you would like—even a few hours is a huge help! All are welcome. To sign up to volunteer, please visit our Sign-Up Genius page. You may sign up for multiple slots if you wish. This is a great way to meet members of the community! Plus, volunteers get to shop the Pre-Sale! Interested in a volunteer role with more responsibility? Section heads are responsible for managing a specific section from collections through the sale as well as recruiting and managing section volunteers. The commitment is 15-30 hours per week from September through mid-October. We are seeking leaders for the following sections: Accessories Housewares Pets Toys Women's Clothing Save the dates* for the sale: Thursday, October 13, 3:00-8:00 p.m. (SFS faculty and staff only) Friday, October 14, 9:30 a.m.-8:00 p.m. (SFS community only) Saturday, October 15, 9:30 a.m.-8:00 p.m. (Open to the public) Sunday, October 16, 9:30 a.m.-4:00 p.m. (Open to the public) *Please note that the sale is pushed back one day this year due to the timing of Yom Kippur. The sale traditionally runs Wednesday to Saturday; this year it will run from Thursday to Sunday. If you are interested in learning more about the Next-to-New Sale, please contact Jessie Jacobson, Director of Special Events, at jacobsonj@sidwell.edu or at 202-537-8442.
