The letter says the Snowden leaks were the “largest and most damaging public disclosure of classified information in our nation’s history.” An unclassified executive summary (http://intelligence.house.gov/uploadedfiles/hpsci_snowden_review_-_unclass_summary_-_final.pdf) of the Committee’s report is available for download. ** Philippines President Duterte Accused ------------------------------------------------------------ In an extraordinary hearing in the Philippine Senate in Manila, a witness claimed today that before Rodrigo Duterte became president, he paid a squad of hit men to carry out summary executions, as the Washington Post’s Emily Rauhala reports (https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/witness-we-killed-for-duterte-fed-body-to-crocodile/2016/09/15/48448984-7b20-11e6-a482-61b767c17607_story.html) . And today, at CSIS, Foreign Minister Percecto Yasay of the Philippines said his nation is firmly committed to its alliance with the United States but will not be lectured on human rights and treated like a “little brown brother,” as Reuters’ David Brunstrom reports (http://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-philippines-idUSKCN11L2EE?il=0) . Dive Deeper: Minister Yasay’s remarks at CSIS today can be viewed on demand (https://www.csis.org/events/philippines-csis-forum-foreign-secretary-perfecto-yasay-jr) . ** Japan Will Step Up ------------------------------------------------------------ Reuters also reports (http://www.reuters.com/article/us-southchinasea-japan-patrols-idUSKCN11L2FE) that Japan will step up its activity in the contested South China Sea through joint training patrols with the US and bilateral and multilateral exercises with regional navies, Defense Minister Tomomi Inada of Japan said today in a speech at CSIS. Resist obliviousness, be aware of your surroundings, but resist what they want from us which is a disabling state of fear. Live in yellow.” ------------------------------------------------------------ —FBI director James Comey on keeping an even keel in this age of terror. It’s the New Orleans soul singer’s first funk album since performing with his famous Crescent City family, The Neville Brothers. I’m jazzed about Aaron’s new record and thrilled that he’s agreed to let Bob Schieffer and I play tracks from it on our podcast, “About the News.” In this week’s episode of our podcast, Bob and I interviewed the groovy and brilliant Maureen Dowd about her new book “The Year of Voting Dangerously: The Derangement of American Politics (https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/bob-schieffers-about-news/id1124101295?mt=2) .” It’s fitting that you can hear Maureen’s adroit, hilarious observations about the current presidential contest and also get down with Neville’s sound on the podcast. And, if you want to see Aaron and his band perform, watch his appearance (http://www.today.com/popculture/aaron-neville-sings-hard-believe-live-today-t102767) on the Today Show this week. Kathie Lee and Hoda dug it, you should too. ** Feedback ------------------------------------------------------------ I always welcome and benefit from your feedback.
