Dear Hunter, I hope you had a terrific summer – it’s hard to believe that September is already here. This time of year is always a bit sad in our house, but this year is particularly tough since Molly has left for her first year of college. Drop-off day was bittersweet – more bitter for Jeanne and me and more sweet for Molly, but she has settled in and is studying hard and having a great time at Boston College. It’s also hard to believe that Election Day is less two months away. Thanks to the generous support of Johnson & Johnson, we had a resounding presence at both the Republican and Democratic National Conventions in July. I was in both cities and can tell you that the SCAN Lounge – equipped with virtual reality videos, an interactive app, corn hole game sets and a photo booth – was a huge hit with attendees in both Cleveland and Philadelphia. More importantly, we raised awareness of the importance of investing in the earliest years of life – and ensuring that all children have a fair chance to survive and thrive. You can see highlights from our work in Cleveland and Philadelphia here (https://t.e2ma.net/click/1011db/h9ytd/92gt5p), with special appearances by Senator Dan Sullivan of Alaska, Congressman Tom Cole of Oklahoma, Senator Chris Coons of Delaware, House Assistant Minority Leader Jim Clyburn of South Carolina, and many more. The presidential election isn’t the only one we’re focused on. Last month, SCAN endorsed Jeanie Forrester (https://t.e2ma.net/click/1011db/h9ytd/pvht5p), a Republican, and Colin Van Ostern (https://t.e2ma.net/click/1011db/h9ytd/5nit5p), a Democrat, in the September 13 primary for the New Hampshire gubernatorial race. While Forrester and Van Ostern take different approaches to financing the expansion of high quality early childhood education in the Granite State, both understand that early investments in kids are critically important and would work hard to prioritize early education if they become governor. And we aren’t alone in our support for these terrific candidates. The New Hampshire Union Leader (https://t.e2ma.net/click/1011db/h9ytd/lgjt5p) endorsed Forrester and the Concord Monitor (https://t.e2ma.net/click/1011db/h9ytd/18jt5p) endorsed Van Ostern. We will be engaged in other races this fall, and I will keep you posted on our progress. Of course, if you have any thoughts or questions in the meantime, please don’t hesitate to call or email. Many thanks, as always, for your support. Warmly, Mark P.S.
