The blast also wounded another American and six Afghan soldiers. According to a statement released by the NATO-led mission in Afghanistan, US troops were accompanying their Afghan counterparts near the province’s capital of Lashkar Gah when their unit came under attack, as The Washington Post’s Thomas Gibbons-Neff reports (https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/checkpoint/wp/2016/08/23/u-s-service-member-killed-in-afghanistans-helmand-province/) . But in the West, they are becoming a post-modern phenomenon, almost like ‘revival games’ providing an opportunity to reinvigorate great cities.” ------------------------------------------------------------ — CSIS Korea Chair Victor Cha on Asia’s desire to host the Olympics, where the next three versions of the games will take place. She’s one to watch for her on-the-ground research in West Africa – specifically looking at how Boko Haram’s violence has affected the region. ** Optics ------------------------------------------------------------ (Photo Credit: Jennifer Cooke. (https://www.csis.org/people/jennifer-g-cooke) ) Children line up to enter the classroom in a school for orphans in Maiduguri, Northern Nigeria. The school was established by a local lawyer to help victims of the terrorist group Boko Haram. Maiduguri has experienced a large influx of internally displaced persons in recent months as thousands flee Boko Haram violence in the country. This photo was taken last week by CSIS Africa Program director Jennifer Cooke while visiting Maiduguri to research the humanitarian crisis Boko Haram has caused in the region. ** Highly Recommended ------------------------------------------------------------ Meet the Aleppo rescue team (https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/worldviews/wp/2016/08/23/we-run-towards-the-screams-meet-the-aleppo-rescue-team-that-saved-5-year-old-omran/?wpisrc=nl_wv&wpmm=1) that saved the five-year-old boy in the now iconic photo. ** CSIS Thursday ------------------------------------------------------------ Join CSIS’s International Security Program on Thursday, August 25, at 10:00 a.m. for “Innovation in the Defense Department with General Paul Selva. But every once in a while we get to experience brilliant sunshine without humidity. Today is one of those days when it feels “California” outside and nothing makes me smile more. When I jumped in the pool early this morning for my master’s club swim, the sky was crystal clear and I could see both the sun and the moon. There was a tiny chill in the air and steam was rising off of the lap lanes from the cool blue water. An hour later I came up for air smiling ear to ear and thinking about a soundtrack for this golden morning. “I Know You Rider (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LS7fRj1JgKw) ” by the Grateful Dead captured it. This groovy version by the band’s Further lineup filmed in Bob Weir’s Tri Studios captures the smile well. ** Feedback ------------------------------------------------------------ I always welcome and benefit from your feedback.
