Dear Hunter and Kathleen: We very much look forward to honoring the Vice President and Beau on October 27 with our prestigious Oxi Day Award for courage. Previous recipients have included the first American brutally and publicly executed by ISIS, journalist James Foley, nominated and introduced by President Bill Clinton and whose parents accepted his award posthumously just weeks after he was killed, and Nobel Laureate Aung San Suu Kyi who received the first Oxi Day Award for women – the Battle of Crete Award. It will be a very special evening for the Manatos family and the many other friends of the Biden family involved with our Foundation who will also be there, including Jim Chanos, Father Alex Karloutsos, Dennis Mehiel, George and Nick Logothetis, George Tsunis and others. We very much hope that you can be a part of this special evening. We at the Washington Oxi Day Foundation work to honor and inspire courage in the world today. We do this annually by presenting our Oxi Day Award and cash prize to a man who shows the kind of David vs. Goliath courage for freedom and democracy that was exhibited by the Greek people in WWII. As you may recall, “Oxi” (pronounced “ohee”) means “no” in Greek. It is the single word that the Prime Minister of Greece answered when Hitler’s Axis Forces asked him, at 3:00 am on October 28, 1941, to surrender. Greece went on to become the first country to stop the Axis horror and inflict a wound that was instrumental to Hitler’s ultimate defeat. Their courage led Winston Churchill to say, “If there had not been the virtue and courage of the Greeks, we do not know which the outcome of World War II would have been.” The Vice President and Beau are tremendous examples of such courage today – Beau for the courage he showed in risking his life for our country (when many in his position would have chosen otherwise), in fighting for the protection of children, and in his fight against cancer. As well, the courage and grace he - as well as you - have shown in the loss of your family members is remarkable. And, the Vice President's David vs. Goliath battle against what will soon be the number one cause of death in the US, cancer, is truly inspirational. Also being honored on October 27 with our courage award for a woman is escaped ISIS sex slave, Nobel Peace Prize nominee and UN Goodwill Ambassador, Nadia Murad. We expect Amal Clooney, who nominated Nadia, to introduce her that night. The approximately 300 dinner guests at the October 27 black tie dinner will include some of the Greek-American community’s most prominent leaders from across the country, as well as US policymakers from the US Congress, White House, State Department, Defense Department, as well as major think tanks, media outlets and human rights organizations. We very much look forward to honoring the Vice President and Beau’s courage and paying tribute to one of the greatest families in US history. Please let us know if you plan to attend, and if you would like to bring any family or friends, please just send us their names as well. Sincerely, Andy Manatos, President Mike Manatos, Executive Director Washington Oxi Day Foundation <http://www.oxidayfoundation.org/>
