CELEBRATE 50 YEARS OF WILLIAM PENN HOUSE Other QUAKER QUOTES AND QUESTIONS News Around the School Principal's Letter MESSAGE FROM MAMADOU Dear Friends, It was wonderful to see all of you at Back-to-School Night! The energy in the building was incredible. I am so glad that you were able to hear about the exciting things happening in our classrooms. This past Wednesday afternoon, students enjoyed our annual club fair in the Arts Center courtyard. Students had a chance to learn about the many groups available to them: Chess Club, Robotics, the Black Student Union, the Jewish Culture Club, Horizon, The Oat, Debate, Model UN, FEM---the list goes on. Every club is open to all interested students. If you have any questions about student clubs, please contact Assistant Dean of Students Darren Speece at speeced@sidwell.edu. Since late summer, students have been preparing for our annual fall One Act Festival, which will take place September 30 (8:00 p.m.), October 1 (8:00 p.m.), and October 2 (2:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.). Students will perform selections from Snapshot, an anthology of plays by a range of playwrights, and Synopsis, by Amy Wagner and the Actors Theatre of Louisville. The One Act Festival will be performed in the Rosenberg Theater. Tomorrow, seniors will be out of school for a College Day. We will also be holding a blood drive on Wednesday, September 28, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. For more information about the blood drive, please contact Shoshanna Sumka at sumkas@sidwell.edu. This past summer, members of the Upper School administration, faculty, and staff worked together to develop a comprehensive sex education program that includes information about consent, communication, social influences, and individual values. We are rolling out this new program this year, which will involve presentations and discussions across all grade levels. For 9th graders, these discussions will occur in 9th Grade Studies classes. Tenth, 11th, and 12th graders will have separate, grade-level programming throughout the year. The first presentation will be to the entire 11th grade class during 9th period on September 26. This program will be followed up by small group discussions with 11th graders later in the week to allow for questions and meaningful dialogue about the topics presented. Seniors will have their grade-level program on October 5 and sophomores will have theirs on October 31, followed by small group discussions. Warmly, Mamadou Mamadou Guèye Upper School Principal Announcements FALL POTLUCKS Now that school is in full swing, please consider hosting a potluck. Fall potlucks are an enduring Sidwell Friends tradition where small groups of parents from your child’s class or team gather together to share food and fun. As a host, you have the flexibility to pick any weekend date in October or November that works best for your family. If you are able to host or have questions about hosting, simply contact Ellen Alexander at ellena@comcast.net and tell us the dates that work for you and the number of guests that you would like to host. Typically, 10 to 14 parents (including the hosts) attend each potluck, but smaller or larger potlucks work as well. ADMISSIONS 2016/17 The Office of Admissions and Financial Aid has shifted its timeline this year with the hopes of being able to better serve all of the families that come through our process. All of these forms and the admissions timelines are available by logging into the online application. Families at-large may submit the online application until December 15, 2016 and should have the supplemental forms and visits or interviews completed by January 15, 2017. We will finish by 8:45 a.m. This is the first in a monthly morning coffee and sharing series sponsored by the PA Quaker Life Committee. Purchase tickets and find more on the event page. PARENT PEER GROUPS FACILITATOR TRAININGS: SEPT. 27, OCT. 5 SFS has a unique, longstanding tradition of hosting Parent Peer Group Meetings to give parents an opportunity to get to know one another and discuss common non-academic, grade-specific issues in a friendly and supportive environment. The events, which are held twice a year, are led by parents for parents with an agenda determined by those attending. All parents interested in facilitating Parent Peer Groups this year, or just interested in learning more about these opportunities, are invited to attend one of the upcoming mandatory training sessions— either September 27, 7:30-8:30 p.m. in the MS Drama Studio on the Wisconsin Avenue campus, or October 5, 8:30-9:30 a.m. in the LS Quaker Meeting House on the Bethesda campus. (Light refreshments will be served prior to both sessions.) We also strongly encourage anyone who has served as a facilitator in the past to attend one of these sessions. Please e-mail Alison Schafer (schafer.alison@gmail.com) or Alpa Chernof (chernof2276@gmail.com) if you have any questions or would like to attend either training. DONATE BLOOD FOR ALL THE LITTLE REASONS! On Wednesday, September 28, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Sidwell Friends will be holding a blood drive for Children's National Medical Center. The bloodmobile will be parked on Zartman Circle. Theses drives are extremely important for the children who depend upon CNMC. The hemo/oncology department currently treats more than 1,400 kids who need blood transfusions. Sickle cell patients need transfusions every four to six weeks. You must sign up in advance. Click here to sign up online. Please make certain to go to the site and read the eligibility restrictions. Some pertain to current medications or vaccinations, travel outside the United States (especially where Zika virus is a concern), dental work, weight, age, and general health. Donors must be healthy, at least 17 years old, and weigh more than 110 pounds. Please bring a photo ID with you, eat a meal (breakfast or lunch), and drink at least 16 ounces of water before your arrival. CELEBRATE 50 YEARS OF WILLIAM PENN HOUSE The Sidwell Friends community is invited to William Penn House’s 50th Anniversary and Day of Service on Saturday, October 8. Families, individuals, and groups of all ages are welcome to attend. Come enjoy fun, food, and fellowship to celebrate 50 years of service and activism in Washington, DC. The day will include hands-on projects supporting the William Penn Quaker Workcamps’ urban gardening program. In the tradition of Quaker service, participants honor the Light in others, build community, and make love visible. Enjoy a BBQ lunch, complete with a visit from William Penn himself! The event is free, but registration is required. Register by September 26 at http://williampennhouse.org/program/354. William Penn House is an important partner to Sidwell Friends students of all ages. In addition to traveling to New Orleans and West Virginia on WPH workcamps, many 5th, 6th, and 9th graders have helped plant community gardens in DC. Other QUAKER QUOTES AND QUESTIONS I go to a Quaker school. Does this make me a Quaker? What an interesting question. Certainly, being a student at a Quaker school doesn’t make you a Quaker any more than you wish to be, but a more thoughtful answer has to look at the different things “being a Quaker” can mean. Quakerism is a practice. A school like Sidwell Friends focuses primarily on teaching Quaker values such as simplicity, equality, and social justice, and on following a range of Quaker practices based on them. Quite a few adults feel that doing so makes them a Quaker at least in a sense, and there is no reason that sentiment should not apply to anyone. Quakerism is a faith. The Religious Society of Friends has no creed per se (you don’t have to say you believe such-and-such), but its practitioners do share a body of beliefs. Often, if someone learns about these and chooses to adopt a significant number of them, they will naturally come to think of themselves as a Quaker. Quakerism is a community. As an organized religion, Quakers establish meeting; perform weddings; keep records; hold property; run schools, camps, colleges, and retirement communities; and much more. To be part of that in a meaningful and legal sense, a person needs to become a formal member of the Society of Friends by asking to join a meeting and then being approved—it’s pretty easy. Quakerism tries to be a light in the world. To many Friends, the most significant aspect of being a Quaker is the change, grounded in Quaker testimonies, that Friends try to bring about. Anyone, anywhere, furthering that effort—no matter for what reason or in what context—is part of the same force in the world that Quakers try to be. Quaker quotes alternate with questions about Quakerism in this newsletter feature. To ask a question about Quaker history or practice, e-mail our Sidwell Friends Quaker Life Committees’ authors at quakerquestions@sidwell.edu!
