It was our community's gift to the Holy Father during his visit. To celebrate the one-year anniversary of Pope Francis' visit to DCandCatholic Charities, we calledon the community tosay"yes" again towalking with Francis. A year after Pope Francis visited our St. Maria's Meals program, Cardinal Donald Wuerl visited the same spot and served dinner to the homeless in downtown DC <https://www.catholiccharitiesdc.org/page.redir?target=http%3a%2f%2fwww.facebook.com%2fccadw%2fposts%2f1096819680371597&srcid=32497&srctid=1&erid=1698429&trid=40a16066-06ee-40de-80d1-a165d6c365cf>. [image: Financial Wellness Workshop] Washington Post columnist Michelle Singletary to headline free financial wellness workshop On Saturday, October 29, Washington Post columnist Michelle Singletary will be the keynote speaker at our first Financial Wellness Workshop. We know from our work that many families come to us in need of help and have very little understanding of personal finance. We aim to change that with a free financial wellness workshop <https://www.catholiccharitiesdc.org/fww16?srctid=1&erid=1698429&trid=40a16066-06ee-40de-80d1-a165d6c365cf>! Join us at Gonzaga High School on Saturday, October 29 from 9 AM-2 PM.Michelle will be joined by a panel of financial experts to cover a wide range of topics from budgeting to understanding credit and debt and more. Lunch will also be provided. The event is open to the full community, you can sign up here <https://www.catholiccharitiesdc.org/fww16?srctid=1&erid=1698429&trid=40a16066-06ee-40de-80d1-a165d6c365cf>! [image: Sanctuaries for Life] Health and hope for a new mom Our Sanctuaries for Life <https://www.catholiccharitiesdc.org/page.aspx?pid=554&srctid=1&erid=1698429&trid=40a16066-06ee-40de-80d1-a165d6c365cf> program helps low-income mothers through the pregnancy and birth of their baby by providing medical referrals, baby supplies and emotional support. Lillian, an immigrant from Nigeria, was facing a high risk pregnancy due to her Sickle Cell disease and the compounding hospital bills left her in a life-threatening situation and at-risk of losing her baby. Our Sanctuaries for Life team connected her with a hospital and doctors who were able to help her deliver a healthy baby boy. Mom and baby, David, are doing great (look at that face!) and Lillian was so thankful for Sanctuaries for Life she wrote this moving letter <https://www.catholiccharitiesdc.org/page.redir?target=http%3a%2f%2fwww.catholiccharitiesdcblog.org%2f2016%2f10%2fa-letter-from-grateful-mom-and-her.html&srcid=32497&srctid=1&erid=1698429&trid=40a16066-06ee-40de-80d1-a165d6c365cf>. Southern Maryland Food Bank launches food truck to "bring food where the hunger is" On Wednesday, October 5, our Southern Maryland Food Bank <https://www.catholiccharitiesdc.org/page.redir?target=http%3a%2f%2fwww.catholiccharitiesdc.org%2fsslpage.aspx%3fpid%3d430&srcid=32497&srctid=1&erid=1698429&trid=40a16066-06ee-40de-80d1-a165d6c365cf>launched its "Meals of Hope" truck, which will begin delivering a hot meal to the hungry throughout the tri-county area twice per week. Program Director Brenda DiCarlo attributed generous members of the community with making the truck possible and supporting the idea of taking food to where hungry southern Marylanders are living. Perhaps there is no moreapt summary of the truck's focus than the quote on the side of the truck from St. Teresa of Calcutta: "If you can't feed a hundred people, just feed one." Daily Do-Good Rock on in the name of charity! The Tortious Tones , a band of Catholic University Columbus School of law alumni, competed in a battleof the bands to raise money for our Catholic Charities Legal Network. They crushed it on stage <https://www.catholiccharitiesdc.org/page.redir?target=http%3a%2f%2fwww.instagram.com%2fp%2fBLJSIxfjmqR%2f%3ftaken-by%3dccadw&srcid=32497&srctid=1&erid=1698429&trid=40a16066-06ee-40de-80d1-a165d6c365cf> and the money raised will support our work providing legal services to those who cannot afford it! Three Catholic Charities employees received the Pope Francis scholarship toearn a master's degree in social work at The Catholic University ofAmerica. Even better- they'll continue to do great work for us here as they pursue their degree! Catholic Night at the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs game was a huge success! The communitydonated 179 pounds of food to our Southern Maryland Food Bank. The Pope would be proud! The schools in the Archdiocese of Washington are stepping up big time! DeMatha High School students have been getting up early <https://www.catholiccharitiesdc.org/page.redir?target=http%3a%2f%2fwww.facebook.com%2fccadw%2fphotos%2fa.156577564395818.63963.126367934083448%2f1083363338383898%2f%3ftype%3d3%26theater&srcid=32497&srctid=1&erid=1698429&trid=40a16066-06ee-40de-80d1-a165d6c365cf> to serve breakfast with our St. Maria's Meals team and Connelly School of the Holy Child alumni and students packed Cup of Joe <https://www.catholiccharitiesdc.org/page.redir?target=http%3a%2f%2fwww.facebook.com%2fccadw%2fposts%2f1106076339445931&srcid=32497&srctid=1&erid=1698429&trid=40a16066-06ee-40de-80d1-a165d6c365cf> breakfast bags for our shelters!
