To subscribe, please sign up here (http://bit.ly/ecs1s) . ** Retaliation ------------------------------------------------------------ The US destroyed three Houthi-controlled radar sites in targeted cruise missile strikes launched off the coast of Yemen today—the first direct US military action against suspected Houthi-controlled targets in the conflict so far. Reuters’ Phil Stewart has the full story (http://www.reuters.com/article/us-yemen-security-missiles-idUSKCN12C294) . Dive deeper: ABC News’ Elizabeth McLaughlin and Luis Martinez wrote this primer: “The US Role in Yemen: What You Need to Know (http://abcnews.go.com/International/us-role-yemen/story?id=42780004) .” CSIS’s Tom Karako has been tracking the missile war in Yemen from the beginning, and you can explore it all using this interactive timeline (http://missilethreat.csis.org/missile-war-yemen/) . ** Thailand Mourns ------------------------------------------------------------ Thailand today announced the death of its King Bhumibol Adulyadej, who reigned as monarch for 70 years. Angela Dewan of CNN has the story (http://www.cnn.com/2016/10/13/asia/thai-king-bhumibol-adulyadej-dies/) , as well as the king’s life in pictures. Dive deeper: What will King Bhumibol’s death mean for Thailand? The FT put together this helpful Q&A (https://www.ft.com/content/fd55a90e-9121-11e6-8df8-d3778b55a923) . And the Economist (http://www.economist.com/news/asia/21708739-thailands-turbulent-politics-just-became-more-complicated-death-thai-king-throws) points out that Thailand’s turbulent politics may become more complicated following the king’s passing. ** Cracking the Kremlin Playbook ------------------------------------------------------------ Russia is systematically undermining Central and Eastern European countries using a network of covert influence, according to a new study released today by CSIS and CSD. Reuters’ Warren Strobel and John Walcott broke the story (http://www.reuters.com/article/us-russia-security-usa-idUSKCN12D13Q) this morning, and you can read the whole report and its recommendations for counteracting the Kremlin playbook here (https://csis-prod.s3.amazonaws.com/s3fs-public/publication/160928_Conley_KremlinPlaybook_Web.pdf) . ** US-India Security Cooperation ------------------------------------------------------------ Yesterday CSIS released a report highlighting the priorities for US-India security cooperation for the next administration. Among the highlights, it recommends a meeting with Prime Minister Modi within the first 100 days of the president taking office in order to underscore the relationship. The report is already making waves (http://www.businesstoday.in/current/economy-politics/new-prez-should-meet-modi-in-100-days-says-us-think-tank/story/238421.html) in India, and you can read the whole report here (https://csis-prod.s3.amazonaws.com/s3fs-public/publication/161003_Hicks_USIndiaSecurity_Web.pdf) . ** In That Number ------------------------------------------------------------ ** 41% ------------------------------------------------------------ The number of racially or religiously aggravated hate crimes recorded by police in England and Wales in July 2016—post Brexit—was 41% higher than the number reported in July 2015. Source: Atlantic (http://www.theatlantic.com/news/archive/2016/10/brext-hate-crimes/503951/) . ** Critical Quote ------------------------------------------------------------ ** “The health-care model is always dangerous, because it leaves you passive and reactive. Your opponents are actual people who are nimble and can change tactics to respond to defensive measures much faster than the flu.” ------------------------------------------------------------ —CSIS’s James A. Lewis on whether or not it’s useful to think about cybersecurity as fighting a pandemic. Source: Washington Post (https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/the-switch/wp/2016/10/12/why-obama-thinks-about-cybersecurity-like-fighting-a-pandemic/) . ** One to Watch ------------------------------------------------------------ (Photo Credit: Just Security.) Kate Brannen (@K8brannen (https://twitter.com/K8brannen/) ) has been named (https://www.justsecurity.org/33401/welcome-kate-brannen-just-securitys-deputy-managing-editor/) deputy managing editor of Just Security—an online forum for analysis of US national security law and policy. She previously served as a national security reporter covering the Pentagon for Foreign Policy, as well as at Politico. Kate is currently a nonresident senior fellow at the Brent Scowcroft Center on International Security at the Atlantic Council. ** Optics ------------------------------------------------------------ (Photo by Mark Wilson/Getty Images.) Zumwalt, former chief of naval operations. ** Highly Recommended ------------------------------------------------------------ Assistant attorney general for national security John Carlin joined Charlie Rose last night to discuss cybersecurity and terrorism. Watch the interview on demand here (https://charlierose.com/videos/29298) . ** CSIS Today ------------------------------------------------------------ CSIS’s Europe Program and the Center for the Study of Democracy (CSD) hosted the report launch of The Kremlin Playbook: Understanding Russian Influence in Central and Eastern Europe (https://www.csis.org/events/kremlin-playbook-understanding-russian-influence-central-and-eastern-europe) . ** CSIS Tomorrow ------------------------------------------------------------ Join CSIS’s Transnational Threats Project for “Libya and Security Challenges for the 2017 EU Presidency (https://www.csis.org/events/libya-and-security-challenges-2017-eu-presidency) ,” featuring Dr. Ian Borg, parliamentary secretary for the 2017 European Presidency and European Union Funding. ** This Town Tomorrow ------------------------------------------------------------ Join the Wilson Center at 10:00 a.m. for “New Presidential Action on Cuba: A Conversation with National Security Advisor Susan E. Rice (https://www.wilsoncenter.org/event/new-presidential-action-cuba-conversation-national-security-advisor-susan-e-rice) .” And join Atlantic Council at 12:00 p.m. for “A New Strategy for US-Iran Relations (http://www.atlanticcouncil.org/events/upcoming-events/detail/a-new-strategy-for-usiran-relations) .” ** CSIS On Demand ------------------------------------------------------------ Catch up on last week’s 2016 Northeast Asia Peace and Cooperation Forum for the challenges and opportunities to security issues in the region. Read “Barack Obama: Now Is the Greatest Time to Be Alive (https://www.wired.com/2016/10/president-obama-guest-edits-wired-essay/) ” and “The President in Conversation with MIT’s Joi Ito and WIRED’s Scott Dadich (https://www.wired.com/2016/10/president-obama-mit-joi-ito-interview/) .” ** Smiles ------------------------------------------------------------ I've been receiving notes today since the break of dawn--gleeful, emotional notes about Bob Dylan's Nobel Prize award. And every note has contributed to a day-long ear-to-ear grin I've got going. Dylan's Nobel Prize is nothing short of monumental. It's an overwhelming affirmation of so many important things on so many levels. Where do you start? Well, you don't need a weather man to know which way the wind blows (https://youtu.be/MGxjIBEZvx0) ... ** Feedback ------------------------------------------------------------ I always welcome and benefit from your feedback.
