Under fire for lewd comments about groping women, Donald Trump released a video statement late Friday in a bid to save his candidacy, apologizing and pledging to be a "better man."

"I've said and done things I regret," he said. "Anyone who knows me knows these words don't reflect who I am. I said it, I was wrong, and I apologize."

"I pledge to be a better man tomorrow," he said.

The tape has been a devastating blow to Trump's campaign, with Republicans racing to distance themselves from their controversial nominee.

While the GOP has endured a litany of Trump's incendiary comments - from his past derogatory comments about women to his plan for a mass deportation force and his plan to temporarily ban Muslim immigrants - the billionaire's predatory comments about crossed a new line.

House Speaker Paul Ryan said he was "sickened by what I heard today," while Senator Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said Trump must apologize for his "repugnant" comments. And Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus said "No woman should ever be described in these terms or talked about in this manner. Ever."

Rob Engstrom, the Chamber of Commerce's national political director, on Friday night called on Trump to drop out of the race and allow his running mate, Indiana Gov. Mike Pence, to assume the top of the ticket.

Earlier on Friday, Trump had issued a partial apology - "I apologize if anyone was offended" - but sought to deflect the heat onto Hillary Clinton's campaign.

"This was locker room banter, a private conversation that took place many years ago. Bill Clinton has said far worse to me on the golf course - not even close. I apologize if anyone was offended," Trump said.
