LAUNCH MEETING FOR PA ALL-SCHOOL ATHLETICS COMMITTEE EJC PARENT WORKSHOP W/ PHILIP MCADOO AND & GYASI ROSS: OCT. 17 GAMETIME! Other GRANDPARENTS AND FRIENDS SEPTEMBER NEWSLETTER QUAKER QUOTES AND QUESTIONS News Around the School US NEWS MS NEWS Principal's Letter MESSAGE FROM MAMADOU Dear Friends, This coming week is Spirit Week! Students will mark each day with a different activity and theme in anticipation of Homecoming on Saturday, October 15, an all-day event filled with various sports games, a club fair, and the Next-to-New Sale. Homecoming Day is a wonderful community event, and parents/guardians, grandparents, younger siblings, and friends are encouraged to take part in the festivities. Please join us! The Homecoming Dance will take place on the evening of October 15 from 8:30 to 10:30 p.m. in the cafeteria. Upper School students voted on the theme for the dance and chose “beach.” Seniors will dress as lifeguards, juniors as the ocean, sophomores as sunshine, and frosh as seaweed. This dance is open to all Upper School students. We encourage students to attend with groups of friends. Dates are not required. It should be a great event! Parent-teacher conferences for parents of 9th grade students will take place November 11. Parents will be able to register for up to three teacher conferences. Online registration will open on November 4 and will remain open until November 10. Registration instructions will be e-mailed separately to parents of 9th graders. Questions about 9th grade parent-teacher conferences should be directed to 9th Grade Dean Diane Scattergood at scattergoodd@sidwell.edu. Since many teachers teach multiple sections of 9th grade classes, they will not be able to meet with everyone's parents on the parent-teacher conference day. If you are not able to meet with a particular teacher on November 11, we encourage you to reach out to your child’s advisor. I look forward to seeing parents of sophomores at 8:00 a.m. on Friday, October 14, for the 10th Grade Parent Coffee with US Administration. Congratulations to the cast and crew of the One Act Festival, Snapshots! It was a phenomenal show! I hope you enjoy the long weekend! Warmly, Mamadou Mamadou Guèye Upper School Principal Announcements NEW EQUITY, JUSTICE, AND COMMUNITY (EJC) COLUMN SFS’s director of EJC, Philip McAdoo, will be sharing periodic letters with the community geared toward transformation of thought, honest dialogue, and concerted action around critical social justice issues affecting students, parents, and faculty. These messages will be posted on the School’s website, with links provided through this newsletter. The following is the opening passage of the first of these communications. Click on the link at the end to read the complete letter. A Reflection on Race and Violence As I begin my second year as director of Equity, Justice, and Community (EJC), I recognize that I am often asked, especially after news of the latest instance of police violence or terrorism begins to circulate, “How are our students doing?” There is no simple answer this question. The violent death of black men, steady threat of terrorist attacks, popular political discontent, as well as the continued struggles of young people to liberate themselves from traditional identifiers of race, gender, class, and sexual orientation, remind us of the work we still have to do as a school community. We are witnessing a revitalization of civil right movements that requires careful listening and discernment. Read more. SPIRIT WEEK FACULTY/STAFF APPRECIATION: VOLUNTEERS NEEDED Spirit Week is coming soon, and the Parents Association is planning something special to thank our terrific faculty and staff. On Friday, October 14, the PA will provide a “Granola Grab and Go” breakfast with granola cups, yogurt, fruit, and beverages in the faculty lounge. We’re looking for some volunteers to donate breakfast supplies and help with setup/cleanup the day of the event. If you can help, please sign up here: http://bit.ly/2cEW5Di. If you have any questions, please contact Robyn Alexander at robynalexchef@gmail.com or MaryAnn Nash at morrnash@gmail.com. ANINDYA DEHEJIA '78 INTERNSHIP PROGRAM Last year, Sidwell Friends launched the Anindya Dehejia '78 Internship Program, made possible by the Dehejia family to celebrate the memory of their son. If you work at an organization that would be interested in hosting a Sidwell Friends student intern or want to learn more about the program, please contact Robbie Gross in the Upper School at GrossR@sidwell.edu. EJC PARENT WORKSHOP W/ PHILIP MCADOO AND & GYASI ROSS: OCT. 17 At Sidwell Friends School, we are committed to finding ways to prepare our students for the challenges they will face beyond our community. This workshop will focus on the three questions below; the ideas generated will contribute to the strategic planning process. What positives can come out of a greater focus on equity, justice, and community at Sidwell Friends School, and what concerns/issues do you foresee? If you could create this program in any way you wanted to, what would it look like, how would it operate, and how would you feel about being part of it? What three wishes for the future do you have for equity, justice, and community at Sidwell Friends School? This workshop, the evening of October 17 in the Robert L. Smith Meeting Room, is open to parents and guardians in all three divisions. The workshop will be introduced by author, attorney, and activist Gyasi Ross and SFS's Philip McAdoo. Members of the SFS Faculty EJC Council will facilitate division-specific discussions of the three questions. Light refreshments will be available in the lobby at 6:30 p.m., and we will start our program promptly at 7:00 p.m. To help our preparations, we ask that you register here, but of course all parents and guardians are welcome whether or not you register in advance. Free childcare will be available for school-age children--- please register at the link above as we have a limited number of slots. GAMETIME! RESUMES AFTER HOMECOMING We hope to see all SFS fans at Homecoming! The athletics schedule for this day can be found here. After Homecoming, we celebrate our golf team on Monday, September 17. This is the day before the MAC Tournament, and there will be a special treat at Upper School lunch. On Tuesday, October 18, everyone is invited to cheer on the field hockey team when they take on Madeira at 4:15 p.m. Fan refreshments will be available on the front porch of the Upper School. PLaS WELCOME RECEPTION: OCT. 12 In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, the Parents of Latino Students (PLaS) Committee invites you to a Welcome Reception on Wednesday, October 12, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Cactus Cantina on Wisconsin Avenue. Come celebrate Hispanic Day, have some fun, and learn about our mission. Everyone is welcome! PLaS is an all-School committee that seeks to support students and families of Latino heritage and strengthen students' connection to their cultural heritage. We also want to include the broader SFS community in the celebration of our culture and traditions while creating awareness of our issues and concerns, including ways to augment students' Spanish language studies. All interested parents are welcome, regardless of race, ethnicity, or background. Please contact Veronica Valencia-Sarukhan if you have any questions at veronicavalenciaj@gmail.com. PARENTS OF ASIAN STUDENTS BOOK CLUB: OCT. 18 Please join the Parents of Asian Students committee for our first-ever book club gathering and conversation. On Tuesday, October 18, at 7:00 p.m. in the Bernstein Drawing Room in Zartman House, we will discuss Celeste Ng's novel, "Everything I Never Told You," a literary thriller that focuses on the struggles of an Asian-American family in 1970s Ohio. The discussion will be moderated by Patricia Chu, Sidwell Friends parent and professor of English literature at George Washington University. All interested parents are welcome, regardless of race, ethnicity, or background. To RSVP (if you haven't already done so through Evite), please e-mail SidwellPASevite@gmail.com. HOMECOMING: OCT. 15! Sidwell Friends Homecoming has something for everyone, whether you can come for 30 minutes or stay the day. Activities begin at 10:30 a.m. with our first All-Community Meeting for Worship of the school year, featuring a conversation about Quakerism with trustee and parent of alumni Michael Morfit and Head of School Bryan Garman. A period of reflection will follow. Michael’s article, Behind the Big Black Hat, was in the last issue of the Alumni Magazine. Childcare will be provided for school-age children who feel they would like to engage in some play and a service project (register here if your child would like to participate). At the rise of meeting (11:30 a.m.), many other activities will get underway. Varsity games start at 11:30 a.m. with girls' soccer, followed by volleyball and field hockey at noon, girls' tennis at 1:00, boys' soccer at 1:30, and football at 2:30. You can also see a printable schedule here. Tours of the Middle School guided by 8th grade students will be offered at 11:45 a.m. and 12:45 p.m. departing from the tents in the courtyard (priority will be given to visiting grandparents and friends). Food and fun activities are provided by student clubs, PBS, 8th and 4th graders, and the PA Arts Committee. The Fox Den will be open! The fabulous Next-to-New Sale, with thousands of items ready for bargain hunters, runs from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. All are welcome at Homecoming, and grandparents and friends are especially invited to experience this spirited and delicious celebration of our Sidwell Friends community. In addition to wearing your school colors, it is helpful to bring at least a little of that old-fashioned commodity, cash! Other GRANDPARENTS AND FRIENDS SEPTEMBER NEWSLETTER GPF_September_2016_Newsletter.pdfThis newsletter was e-mailed to a number of grandparents and friends---you can find a copy here. You'll find a special request for grandparents and friends regardless of where they are located, as well as invitations to activities on campus. We do not specifically invite grandparents and friends to our parenting speaker events (for example, Tony Wolf on November 10), but grandparents and friends are always welcome if you want to extend the invitation yourself. If your student’s grandparent or special friend did not receive the newsletter and would like to receive these periodic e-mails with invitations, please have them contact Kathi Webb (webbk@sidwell.edu). QUAKER QUOTES AND QUESTIONS Q: What is the difference between Quaker Meeting for Worship and meditation? The decisive intention to be present and form an inner strength makes Quaker Meeting for Worship and various traditions of meditation practice appear alike. In both, people can focus on finding the power of the divine within themselves, achieving a sense of calm, peace, and contentedness with life. However, while Friends do focus heavily on their individual connections to a higher power, Friends in addition particularly value the spiritual synergy of “gathered community.” Gathering in silence to worship, Friends collectively seek the will of God. They strive to supplant the self with unity and trust achieved in sitting in silence together, preparing to receive what emerges from extended stillness and inner reflection. Quakers believe the word and will of God may present itself so purely that any Friend may be moved to rise and speak into the silence. This tradition of expecting continuing revelation of the word of God may in any instance provide wisdom and support to some in meeting, and may not resonate with others. “Community is a constellation. Each one of us is a light in the emerging collective brightness. A constellation of light has the greater power of illumination than any single light would have on its own. Together we increase brightness.” ---John O’Donohue in Eternal Echoes. Quaker quotes alternate with questions about Quakerism in this newsletter feature. To ask a question about Quaker history or practice, e-mail our Sidwell Friends Quaker Life Committees’ authors at quakerquestions@sidwell.edu!
