Tuesday - October 5, 2010 From the School LETTER FROM SALLY This week’s query: When you are mad at someone, how do you learn not to take it out on others? Assembly: Las Americas Mariachi Band This Thursday is Middle School Back-to-School Night! Here are some important tips about the evening; If you need child care, you must call and reserve your space today! We need to be sure we have adequate staff and food for the students who are coming. Drop students at the playground at the Wannan Gym, and the fee is $10 cash payable that evening. Parking is available both in the garage and on 37th Street. The Middle School building will be open to access the Athletic Center, or you may walk in right from 37th Street. The program will begin with a short general meeting at 6:00 in the Athletic Center. Refreshments will be available for parents on the upper floor of that building. Please be sure that you know your son or daughter's homeroom teacher (5/6) or advisor (7/8) because you will move to that classroom after the general meeting. Many teachers use the time during the general meeting to get their classrooms ready; we ask that you not view that time -- or the evening in general -- as a time to drop in for private conversation about your son or daughter. Conference days are the third week in October. We apologize in advance about the fact that chairs will be in short supply since they are set up in the Athletic Center for the general meeting. One more year – next year we will have a new meeting space that will solve that problem! Directories have gone home with the youngest child in the family. Also remember that the directory is available on line. Please be sure to read the privacy statement that is printed on the first page of the directory. SFS phone numbers and email addresses are to be used only for school business. A note from Nurse Jasmin: As the weather begins to change, viral illnesses will become more prevalent. As a reminder, SFS is appreciative to parents for following the School guidelines about reporting symptoms to the MS/US Nurse. Please keep sick children at home who are experiencing a temperature above 100.0F in addition to symptoms of cough, sore throat, headache, fatigue, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, and/or chills. These children should stay home for at least 24 hours after they no longer have a fever or signs of a fever without the use of fever-reducing medicines (such as Tylenol or Advil) and/or antiviral drugs. With all the rain that we have had lately, we have had lots of calls about 7/8 athletic contests. The athletic department is careful to keep two sources of information up to date: the website (front page: Athletics: pull down “Schedules and Scores”) and the Information Hotline (202-537-8176; press 1). We are monitoring student arrivals at school a bit more closely this year and sending notification about patterns of lateness to school. We realize that traffic is tough in the morning, especially when the weather is bad, but we also know that timely arrival to school helps students start the day feeling organized. Thanks for your help on behalf of our students! All Middle School students will be participating in a “Respect Rally” during school on Friday, October 29th. Parents are invited to an informational meeting about the program Wednesday evening, October 27th at 7:30 PM in the Middle School Drama Studio. We hope to see you all on Thursday night!Instrumental Music Notes INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC NOTES 5/6 Orchestra – Concert Band – Wednesday Rehearsal Period – At Daybreak 7/8 Orchestra – Concert Band – Wednesday Rehearsal Period – Holiday Bells are Ringing and CimarronChorus Rehearsals for 7/8 7/8 Chorus Rehearsals This Week: Wednesday, October 6th Boys Ensemble 7:25 (sharp) Girls Ensemble Rehearsal Period Thursday, October 7th Girls Ensemble 7:25(sharp) Friday, October 8th Boys Ensemble 11:00-11:25 Looking ahead…there will be two afterschool rehearsals the week of October 11th. It is time, once again, for one of Sidwell Friends' most beloved traditions. This year's fall potlucks will be held on the weekends of Oct 22-24, Oct 29-31, and Nov 5-7. If you are interested in hosting a potluck for parents in your child's class/team, please contact Belinda Nixon ( bnixon@stanfordalumni.org ) or Gita van Heerden ( gsvh@verizon.net ). 7th Grade Parents CHI Meeting October 12 - 7th Grade Parents CHI Meeting The 7th Grade CHI Meeting will be held on October 12. The MEETING will begin at 7:30 in the Middle School Drama Studio, and will be preceded by a light dinner, beginning at 6:45 PM. CHI meetings with Middle School Counselor, Jack Huntington, and Middle School Principal, Sally Selby, are very important and parents are urged to attend. The purpose of these meetings is to discuss the developmental milestones of the upcoming year and how to best support your children in their academic and non-academic work, and how parents can support this work at home, and to learn how to best navigate the social scene. This meeting is designed to help strengthen the communications and bonds between the school and parents in an effort to help support everyone in our community in making healthy and informed decisions pertaining to our children. Middle School Diversity Committee Middle School Diversity Co-Clerk The Diversity Committee seeks a volunteer to serve as co-clerk for the middle-school diversity committee. If interested please contact Edith Michel at edith.michel@pgparks.com. Thank you. Next to New Sale Recycles Everything Did You Know the Next to New Sale Recycles Everything (Almost Everything!) The Next to New Sale was green long before the rest of the school got on the green bandwagon. We take in 20,000+ items each year and recycle them in myriad ways. The items are passed on to other homes through purchase at the Sale. Wearable, in-season clothing that we are not going to sell is taken to Martha's Table, and clothing deemed unwearable is sent to the textile recycling station in Gaithersburg. Montgomery County turns all those worn, torn, unusable articles of clothing into rugs. Who knew? We did! Next to New finds a place for everything. The only items that are truly thrown out are those that are broken beyond repair, unsafe, or items that do not work and can't be fixed. People often wonder what happens to items that remain when the sale is over. Organizations outside the Sidwell Friends community benefit tremendously. On Sunday morning, charities such as Noah's Ark, A Wider Circle, National Children's Center and even individual teachers from the DC Public Schools come in to haul away what's left. Want to know more? Click here.Stretching Kids Without Breaking Them The Parents Council of Washington invites you to hear Dr. William Stixrud, PhD speak on "Stretching Kids Without Breaking Them - Stress-Free Ways of Supporting Development in Children and Teenagers". Dr. Stixrud will be presenting Thursday, October 14th from 7:00 to 9:00 P.M. at the National Cathedral School, Hearst Hall, 3612 Woodley Road, Washington, DC 20016. Sidwell Friends School is a member of the Parents Council of Washington, so all Sidwell Friends' parents enter for free. $10.00 for non-members. Refreshments will be served, and there is parking in the Cathedral Garage (Wisconsin Avenue entrance) for $6.00. For more information about Parents Council of Washington, please click here. October PA Arts News An Invitation from John Touchton to the SFS Community ~ Now celebrating its twenty-first year, the annual Independent Schools Chorus Festival concert will be held at the National Cathedral on Wednesday, October 20th, beginning at 8:00 PM. Five hundred fifty student singers from area independent school choruses (including Sidwell, Maret, Potomac, Landon, Holton-Arms, GDS, St. Albans, National Cathedral School and Bullis) perform one solo piece and then join together to perform four massed choral works.
