Great Week for Defense


If you play how you practice, this weekend could be setting up nicely for
the Arkansas defense, according to defensive coordinator Willy Robinson.

After a solid outing Tuesday, the third-year Razorback assistant said his
unit followed up well on Wednesday.

³I look back at (Tuesday¹s) practice and we wish we had played two plays
differently than how we did,² Robinson said. ³Today was a hard day. We
grinded it; they endured it. I¹m not sure if there were many mistakes at
all. We got our hands on a lot of balls today, had some interceptions and
played the deep ball well.²

The Razorbacks currently rank fourth nationally in total defense and scoring
defense, allowing just 187.5 yards per game to Tennessee Tech and
Louisiana-Monroe. In those two games Arkansas gave up a combined 10 points.
By comparison, 10 points was the lowest the Razorbacks had held an opponent
in a single game under Bobby Petrino prior to this season.

³That¹s really good and we¹re excited about it,² Robinson said. ³I think we
all know, man-to-man, the two teams we played were good opponents, tough
opponents. We studied for them and we played well against them. But now we
go into Man Country; we go into the SEC. We¹ve got to see how we match up.
We¹ve been working for it and working hard at it. That¹s what we live for.
Now it¹s a different story. What happened in the past is in the past. Our
season starts Saturday.²

The No. 12 Razorbacks travel to Georgia for an 11 a.m., Central kickoff.
Robinson said he is most interested in seeing how his secondary can do
against a talented crop of Bulldogs receivers.

³It¹s going to be a matter of how we match up,² Robinson said. ³We¹ve got
corners that are of 5-11 stature going against 6-4 and 6-5 receivers. It¹s
very important for us to stay on top. Stay high and stay on top. We¹ve go to
outfight the jump ball and don¹t give up anything cheap.²

Georgia meets with NCAA officials Friday to appeal the four-game suspension
for A.J. Green, who caught seven passes for 137 yards and two touchdowns
last season against the Razorbacks. Robinson said Arkansas has practiced
this week as if Green will be on the field.

³We¹ll be prepared for him,² Robinson said. ³A.J. does a great job of
stretching the field and they move him around to see if they can get
match-ups. Again, last year they tried to take advantage of him inside, and
you don¹t see him inside very much when they go to their multiple-receiver
sets. Him inside now puts us on with a tough little kid in Jerico (Nelson),
a battler, competitor, but again you have the height advantage on their side
of the ball. They¹ll move him around and we¹ll be aware of where he¹s at and
we¹ll do some things when he¹s in there. The thing is, hopefully we can
manage it the way we have the plan set for.²
