Wednesday - September 22, 2010 From the School UPPER SCHOOL PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE: BACK-TO-SCHOOL NIGHT, THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 23 We are looking forward to welcoming you to Upper School Back-to-School Night this Thursday, September 23. The program will begin promptly at 6:45 p.m. in the new Athletic Center. Programs and name tags will be available there until 6:45 p.m. Everyone is encouraged to park in the garage. Please use the walkway on the north side of the Upper School and proceed around the US building to the pathway between the Wannan and Kenworthy gyms and walk toward the Head House entrance to the Athletic Center. Please make every effort to be in place by 6:45 p.m. for the beginning of the program. For those of you who are unable to arrive for the opening program in the Athletic Center, name tags and programs will be available in the Dining Room until 7:25 p.m. Parents arriving after 7:25 p.m. should proceed to Academic Dean Mamadou Gueye’s office (Room 132) where you can pick up programs and student schedules. To enable the evening to run smoothly, you should know the name of your child’s advisor so you can move from the Athletic Center to advisory in a timely fashion. However, the names of advisors will be posted in the hallways as well. Advisors will distribute student schedules from 7:15 – 7:25 p.m. This is a wonderful opportunity to meet your child’s teachers and to learn more about the classroom experience this year. See you on Thursday! Lee PalmerMORNING DROP-OFF ON RODMAN ST. Parents are asked not to u-turn on Rodman Street during morning drop-off. Doing so creates hazards for pedestrians and cars, and strains relations with our neighbors. Instead, please make use of the left turn signal to enter the campus when traveling southbound on Wisconsin Avenue. In addition to u-turns, our neighbors have reported speeding cars from Rodman through the traffic light and cars that block the intersection of Rodman and Wisconsin. Please take care to obey all traffic regulations to protect the safety of all pedestrians at this busy intersection.COUNSELOR'S CORNER “Race To Nowhere” is a documentary that takes a close-up look at the pressures facing today's students including lives packed with activities (academics, sports, arts, community service, etc.) that leave little room for down-time or family time. The film tackles the difficult and controversial issue of a culture overly obsessed with success and achievement while touching on how this may be affecting our children. The Norwood School is sponsoring a showing of this documentary on Monday, October 4th at 7pm at the Landmark Bethesda Row Cinema. Tickets are $10 in advance, $15 at the door. Thanks for helping to keep our community safe!IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTS FROM THE ADMISSIONS OFFICE Admissions Information for new Applicants from Current Families and Families of Employees: in an effort to work more closely with current families and employees who are applying for a child's admission for the 2011-12 academic year and who is not currently enrolled at Sidwell Friends, the deadline to submit Part I, the application form, is October 1, 2010. All supplementary material to complete the application is due by January 15, 2011. The online application and all forms are now available from the website from the admissions tab. We need volunteers to bring baked goods, fresh fruit, ground coffees, teas, juices and other breakfast goodies. A complete list of items needed is attached. Contributions should be dropped off at the Upper School Faculty Lounge no later than 7:45 a.m. on the morning of Friday, October 1st. Please place your name on all your non-disposable dishes and have your student pick it up by the end of the day in the Teachers Lounge.
