In this Issue: • Select Bus Service Begins on October 10 Along M15 Route • Senior Health Fair on October 13 • Update on Installation of Pedestrian Signals Along Park Avenue • Bing Addresses Conference on Elected Officials and Technology • Mammogram Van to Visit Stanley Isaacs Center on October 25 • Tomorrow is Deadline to Register to Vote in General Election Select Bus Service Begins on October 10 Along M15 Route On October 10, Select Bus Service (SBS) will come to the East Side, operating along the M15 route on First and Second Avenue. The new bus service aims to increase the speed and efficiency of bus transportation on the East Side. A similar pilot program implemented in the Bronx resulted in decreases in travel time of up to 24%. Select Bus Service will replace the Limited M15, while local M15 service will remain unchanged. The new system will increase travel speed and lessen wait times by utilizing several measures, including dedicated bus lanes and off-board fare collection. After purchasing a ticket from a free-standing machine at the SBS stops with a MetroCard, riders will receive a receipt which allows them to board the bus through any of the three doors. Currently, New York City buses spend 20 percent of their time idling while passengers board and disembark. These improvements will reduce this idling time significantly. In 2011-12, additional features such as traffic signal priority and sidewalk enhancements are scheduled to be added to the system. Assemblymember Bing authored legislation, adopted in this year's State budget, which will allow for the use of cameras to aid in bus lane enforcement. By keeping bus lanes clear of unauthorized vehicles, these cameras will reduce travel time and allow the new system to operate more efficiently. If you have questions about Select Bus Service, please contact Assemblymember Bing's office at (212) 605-0937, or visit the Select Bus Service website at www.nyc.gov/brt. Senior Health Fair on October 13 On Wednesday, October 13, Assemblymember Bing will host his eighth annual Senior Health Fair in the Community Room of Knickerbocker Plaza, located at 1751 Second Avenue, between 91st and 92nd Streets. The Health Fair will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., with over 20 organizations scheduled to participate, including Beth Israel, Lenox Hill, and New York-Presbyterian Hospitals; the Hospital for Special Surgery; Comptroller Tom DiNapoli's Office; E-Care Diary; the Yorkville Public Library; Visions; and the New York Foundation for Senior Citizens. The Health Fair features free health care services, such as blood pressure screening and glaucoma testing. Refreshments will be provided by TD Bank. Free flu shots will be available for seniors through the Visiting Nurse Service of New York between 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. If you are interested in receiving a flu shot, you must call (212) 605-0937 in advance of the fair to make an appointment. Update on Installation of Pedestrian Signals along Park Avenue The New York City Department of Transportation and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority have begun the installation of new pedestrian traffic signals and ramps along Park Avenue between 46th and 56th Streets. The project will include traffic light upgrades, structural improvements, and new sidewalk areas at several corners along the corridor. The project is scheduled to be completed by September 2011. These improvements will increase safety for pedestrians while also creating clearer traffic signals for vehicles traveling along Park Avenue. The lack of existing pedestrian signals is due to the infrastructure of Park Avenue, including an underground deck over tracks which carry trains in and out of Grand Central Terminal. In 2007, this stretch of Park Avenue was cited by Transportation Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan as an area with a high incidence of vehicle accidents involving pedestrians. The installation of pedestrian signals is intended to address this high accident rate. Bing Addresses Conference on Elected Officials and Technology On October 2, Assemblymember Bing was invited to speak at the 2010 "Democracy 2.0: Connecting with the 21st Century American" Leadership Summit, hosted by the State Legislative Leaders Foundation (SLLF) in Boston. The SLLF is a nonpartisan organization committed to providing specialized education and enrichment programs for high-level leaders of State Legislatures. Assemblymember Bing and South Carolina Representative Nathan Ballentine were the speakers on a panel entitled "Legislators Doing it Right" with regard to their use of technology to connect with constituents and to advance their political activities. Mammogram Van to Visit Stanley Isaacs Center on October 25 On October 25, Assemblymember Bing will sponsor the American-Italian Cancer Foundation's Mobile Mammography Van's visit to the Stanley Isaacs Center at 415 East 93rd Street. Women over the age of forty who have not had a mammogram in the past year are eligible to sign up for the free procedure. To do so, you must make an appointment in advance with the American-Italian Cancer Foundation by calling 1-800-453-8370, extension 1. This is the eighth consecutive year that Assemblymember Bing has brought the Mammogram Van to his District. Tomorrow is Deadline to Register to Vote in General Election The deadline to register to vote in the November 2 general election is Friday, October 8. Registration can be completed by visiting one of two Board of Elections Offices in Manhattan, or by mailing a completed voter registration form to the Board of Elections.
