CASTLE NOT RULING OUT A WRITE-IN BID: Delaware GOP Rep. Mike Castle told reporters Wednesday in the House Speaker's Gallery he's not ruling out a write-in Senate bid after losing last week's Senate primary to the tea party-backed Christine O'Donnell. Still, he said, such an effort remains unlikely.

"Let's put it this way--you sign up to be a write-in by Sept. 30," said Castle.

Asked directly if he was considering a bid, Castle said he's "given it some thought. I probably won't do it. I'm not exactly approaching this with bated breath."

"I don't want to necessarily interfere with Republican chances," said Castle, although he added, "I've had a lot of people approach me about it."

Castle spokeswoman Kate Dickens said the congressman has had some conversations about a write-in effort, but that he likely won’t pull the trigger.

“We are getting a lot of mail and calls on it,” Dickens told POLITICO. But when pressed on how likely Castle was to pursue it, she replied, “under five percent.”

Reached by phone, a Coons campaign spokesman said he could not comment on the development. --Alex Isenstadt and David Catanese
