Tuesday - October 12, 2010 From the School LETTER FROM SALLY This week’s query: How can I feel safe in the face of the unknown? This week’s assembly: Speakers from our partner organizations for the Fannie Mae Miniwalk for the Homeless. Students will then be bringing home the registration forms; we hope that you will contribute to this effort! Special alert for 5th and 6th grade parents: Tomorrow (10/13) the Upper School juniors will be taking the PSAT in the athletic center, so the locker rooms will not be available during 5/6 PE. Students should come to school in clothing and shoes that will be comfortable for PE class and will report directly to the fields. (This does not affect 7/8.) 7th grade parents – we hope to see you tonight for our CHI meeting! 7/8 students have a service day on Thursday. Students should have received their packets of school photos. The Middle School takes only individual photos, not class pictures. However, we do publish a yearbook in the spring which includes homeroom and advisory group shots. This Friday (10/15) is the make-up day for photos; please contact Carlene in the office if your child needs a make-up photo. 8th grade parents – remember your coffee in the Upper School on Friday morning. Congratulations to 5th grader Isabel Kirsch who had her article published in last week’s Northwest Current newspaper. We need more journalists! Students should see me if they are interested. 5th grader Nicky DeParle is collecting used soccer cleats to send to Honduras. He would love yours! Send them to Nicky in Ms. Nick’s room, or send them to the office over the next two weeks. We need help from our 8th graders. On the morning of Saturday, November 6th there is a big Admissions Open House, and we need them to help lead a discussion group for prospective students and their families. Parents or students may email me or sign up in the office. We have a number of nice dishes of all kinds that have come in with snacks for our faculty meetings. If you are missing a platter or a bowl, please come and claim it – and thanks for your delicious contributions! Library assistant Janet Finucane is continuing to have some health problems and has stopped work temporarily. Standing in for her will be Alicia Hanson. Welcome, Alicia – we’re glad to have you! The meeting will begin at 7:30 in the Middle School Drama Studio. CHI meetings with Middle School Counselor, Jack Huntington, and Middle School Principal, Sally Selby, are very important and parents are urged to attend. The purpose of these meetings is to discuss the developmental milestones of the upcoming year and how to best support your children in their academic and non-academic work, and how parents can support this work at home, and to learn how to best navigate the social scene. This meeting is designed to help strengthen the communications and bonds between the school and parents in an effort to help support everyone in our community in making healthy and informed decisions pertaining to our children.
