Tuesday - September 21, 2010 From the School LETTER FROM SALLY Middle School queries for the week are written by the students in the 7th grade Quakerism and the Arts class. They are part of the daily bulletin and are read at Meeting for Worship each week. Student queries begin this week! This week’s query: How can I make new friends but still stay in touch with my old ones? There will not be an assembly this week because of the 7/8 camping trip. For the camping trip: On Thursday morning, drop 7th and 8th graders off at the north end of the garage. Spaces for the gear for each team will be marked off on the sidewalk at the north end of the garage – students must be sure that they are putting their gear in the correct area. Pick-up on Friday afternoon will be arranged in the same way. After-care will be open on Friday afternoon for students who are usually enrolled in that program. Check your team information for the pick-up time on Friday; supervision will be provided through the normal close of the day. If your child takes medication and will be bringing it on the trip, it should be sent in the original container with clear instructions and given to Nurse Jasmin by Wednesday. 6th grade parents – we will look forward to seeing for your CHI meeting next Tuesday evening, September 28. The program begins at 7:30 in the drama studio and is preceded by a light dinner at 6:45 PM. 7th and 8th graders are beginning to play interscholastic team contests. Some reminders about the schedule when that occurs: Game schedules are posted on the Athletics section of the Sidwell Friends School website. Any changes to the schedule because of weather or other circumstances will be posted on the website as soon as decisions are made. This information is also on the hotline, which can be reached at 202-537-8176, #1. Parents are encouraged to attend games, both at home and away! Picking up students after “away” games: If parents attend games away from campus, they may take their own child directly home after the game, but please check out with the coach so that s/he knows that the student has left. If a student is to ride home with a parent other than his or her own, that student must bring in a note from their parents before they leave campus giving permission for the child to go home with the other parent. Transportation back to SFS will always be provided after away games. The Athletic Department will do its best to provide an approximate time for pick up. This time is, of course, subject to change due to the circumstances of the game, traffic, weather, etc. Usually away games start at 2:45 and end at 4:00. Travel back to school is usually ½ hour, so normal time to return after collecting equipment and boarding the bus is 4:30- 4:45. Students will be dropped off from the bus or van at the garage, and that is where parents should plan to meet them. That is also the meeting place after home games. If students need to leave backpacks, books, or clothes here at school, they have the following options: 1. Lock belongings in their Middle School locker. The door near the office is unlocked until 6:00 PM. 2. Leave belongings in their advisor’s room. If the advisor has left by the time students return, there is usually someone who can open the door. Students can stop by the office or ask a teacher. 3. Leave their belongings in their gym locker. In the rare instance that a team returns after 6:00, the red phone at the Security Office may be used to radio an officer who can unlock the building and a classroom if necessary. Athletic Team Spirit Days and “Secret Psyche:” Occasionally your child will leave for school wearing what one might consider an unusual get-up: pajamas, mismatching clothes, etc. It’s probably for Team Spirit, an effort to promote enthusiasm and camaraderie among team members. The teams decide on their spirit displays, but the team captain must check with Jennifer or Sally in advance to clear the plans. The Athletic Department discourages the practice of “Secret Psyche,” which means buying something for a team member to be given secretly the day of the game. Back to School Night is coming up! The program will start in the new Athletic Center at 6:00 PM on Thursday night, October 7th. Child care is available for children of elementary and middle school age, but we MUST know how many students to expect so that we have enough staff to take care of them. We will also provide a pizza dinner for the students. The fee is $10 payable in cash that evening. Please call the Middle School office no later than Tuesday, October 5, to sign up for child care. Students may be dropped off at the Wannan Gym, next to the Middle School playground. We regret that we can only provide child care to children of elementary and middle school age, and we encourage students to bring homework, reading materials, or activities to keep them occupied. The evening will end around 8:15 p.m. for 5/6 and around 8:45 p.m. for 7/8, and students may be picked up in the Dining Room. Call the Middle School office no later than Tuesday, October 6, to reserve your space for child care. Interested in carpooling to save time and gas but don’t know any SFS families who live near you? Use the printable directory tool to create your own list of SFS families by zip code. You can limit the results to your child’s grade or division, or all families in your zip code. Do you have Legos in your house that you don’t need any more? Former Upper School faculty member Jon Zeljo was burned out of his house recently in the Boulder, Colorado area. His children had started a small business renting Legos for special occasions, and they would love any donations that you would be willing to give. Send them to the Middle School office, and we will send them on their way to Colorado. Choral Rehearsals 7/8 Choral Rehearsals This Week: Wednesday, September 22nd Boys Ensemble 7:25am Morning Drop Off on Rodman Street Morning drop off on Rodman Street Parents are asked not to U-turn on Rodman Street during morning drop-off. Doing so creates hazards for pedestrians and cars, and strains relations with our neighbors. Instead, please make use of the left turn signal to enter the campus when traveling southbound on Wisconsin Avenue. In addition to U-turns, our neighbors have reported speeding cars from Rodman through the light and cars that block the intersection of Rodman and Wisconsin. Please take care to obey all traffic regulations to protect the safety of all pedestrians at this busy intersection.Visits During the School Day Visits During the School Day Please remember that SFS security policy requires parents to check in at the principals’ offices or at the Zartman House front desk when visiting our campuses during the school day. US parents may also sign in at the Dean’s Office. You will need to log in and obtain a visitor badge that must be worn while on campus. Thanks for helping to keep our community safe!Math Counts Attention 6th, 7th and 8th grade parents!! Does your child like solving challenging math problems and puzzles? If so, encourage him or her to come to Math Counts meetings. Starting on Thursday, September 30th, we will be gathering in Mr. C’s room (Room 306) from 3:30 – 4:30 pm every Thursday to tackle fun and challenging math problems together. In the spring, a team of students will be selected to represent Sidwell Friendsin area-wide competitions. Students do not need to sign up to attend the meetings – simply show up! An after school snack is provided for the students. Come learn more about our Brightwood Reading Partnership. Parent volunteers read to students at our sister school, Brightwood Elementary School in DC. Last year, volunteers read and donated more than 1500 books to students at Brightwood. A volunteer meeting will be held Tuesday, October 5th, 8:30-9:30 am, in the LS library. In an effort to work more closely with current families and employees who are applying a child for the 2011-12 academic year and who is not currently enrolled at Sidwell Friends, the deadline to submit Part I, the application form, is October 1, 2010.
