International Herald Tribune September 15, 2010 Historical Crossroads Regarding Thomas Friedman’s “Saudi time” (Views, Sept. 9): As quixotic as the suggestion is that King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia invite Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel to the Saudi capital and present him the Arab peace plan, stranger things have happened in history. However, it is Mr. Netanyahu who stands at a historical crossroads. The question is, will he seal his legacy by being the person who dares to take risks and finally brings peace to a battle-scared land after over 60 years of turmoil? Or, will he revert to being the politician who took risks to enrich himself and his friends at the expense of his office and his country? More than anything President Barack Obama or the president of the Palestinian Authority, Mahmoud Abbas, does, it is the answer to this question that will determine the success or failure of the peace talks.
