WINTER SEASON SCHEDULE Other ONGOING TOILETRIES COLLECTION News Around the School Principal's Letter MESSAGE FROM MAMADOU Dear Friends, I hope you and your families have enjoyed a wonderful break. As we prepare to return to school, I hope we will carry with us the sense of peace and goodwill that this winter holiday season has brought. Our first day back at school is a review day. Students will follow a normal daily schedule and work with their teachers to prepare for their exams. We will have two reading days during this exam period: January 4 and 10. These days have been set aside for students to study and meet with their teachers. Some teachers may hold optional review sessions on these days. Students should speak directly with their teachers to learn more about any reviews that might be scheduled. The announcements section below includes additional information about the semester exams. If you have any questions, please contact Assistant Principal Min Kim at kimm@sidwell.edu. The third quarter, which begins on January 17, starts with a three-day school week. Some students will change arts classes for the second semester; seniors will change their history and English classes. Seniors must purchase second semester books through the MBS Virtual Bookstore. Questions about second semester schedules and books should be directed to Min Kim. The Parents of Black Students group has partnered with the Parents Association to sponsor the second annual community service program for MLK Day (Monday, January 16). Following a brief, query-centered discussion (and storytelling for younger members of the community), SFS volunteers will choose to participate in one of the available service events: 1. Bake casseroles for Bethesda Cares. 2. Make cards and sort donated items for Veterans Affairs DC Medical Center. 3. Create healthy snack bags for N Street Village Day Center. 4. Create winter care bags for Georgetown Ministry Center. The Quaker Life Committee will also host coffee and conversation with speakers from the National Coalition for the Homeless. Afterward, we will regroup for a short time of reflection before closing with a moment of silence. Please sign up to donate items and/or volunteer for one of the service engagements to help the underserved in our community. Debra, an ordained minister with the Unitarian Church, holds master's degrees in public health and divinity. She has written several books about raising children, including From Diapers to Dating, Beyond the Big Talk, and What Every 21st-Century Parent Needs to Know. Her specialty is helping parents talk to their children about sexuality in a way that reflects parents' own family values. While the conversation will mostly be directed toward parents of older students, we invite all to attend. This talk is open to the broader community, so please feel free to bring a friend. Light refreshments will be available at 6:30 p.m. in the lobby of the Robert L. Smith Meeting Room. The program will start at 7:00 p.m. Childcare is available for Sidwell Friends community members.
